Nova Scotia Chess News

After a delay of about one year, the Nova Scotia Chess News is back! As your interim editor, I would like to have four issues released each year. These issues will hopefully be released every January, April, July, and October. The size of each issue will depend upon the amount of news to report, the number of chess related articles contributed from our members, as well as other factors. Since this is intended to be your newsletter, I would be happy to hear from you regarding suggestions on the format and content.
Since this is the first issue in over a year, this newsletter contains brief summaries of the major tournaments held since the previous issue. Future issues will contain info only from events held during the previous three month period.
The Nova Scotia Chess Association is looking for someone who would be interested in taking on the job of editing this newsletter for the long term. So, if you have an interest in writing about chess related items, have access to a computer, and also have some basic writing skills, please let us know if you would like to help. If you would like to donate some of your time to this worthwhile cause, please contact either Steve Saunders or myself. Your help would be very much appreciated.

Canadian Youth Chess Championships
The Nova Scotia Provincial Youth Chess Championships will again be organized by the Nova Scotia Scholastic Chess Association (NSSCA). The NSSCA did an excellent job at organizing this event last year and therefore, the NSCA has agreed to again let them organize the event for this year.
The Canadian Youth Chess Championship is a tournament which is run in five sections: Under18, Under 16, Under 14, Under 12, and Under 10. This year’s final will be held in Montreal in July just prior to the start of the Canadian Open. The top three boys and top three girls in each age section from each Provincial Canadian Youth Chess Championship tournament will be invited to participate in the National Championship.
Canadian Zonal Chess Championship
The Canadian Zonal Chess Championship will be held this year in Richmond, British Columbia during the March 21 to April 2 period. Players who will be participating this year include GM Kevin Spraggett (2633), GM Alexandre Lesiege (2617), IM David Ross (2433), IM Brian Hartman (2427), and FM Jonathan Berry (2386). The upcoming Nova Scotia Closed Chess Championship will determine our Provincial Champion who will earn the right to represent Nova Scotia in the Canadian Zonal Chess Championship. This is starting to look like it is going to be an exciting tournament to watch this spring.

Chess Problem #1 Chess Problem #2
White to move and mate in two moves.White to move and mate in two moves.
Here is an interesting game from Round #2 of the 2002 US Championship.
GM Larry Christiansen (2571) - FM Igor Foygel (2474)
2002 US Championship (2), Seattle, January 6, 2002 (annotations by John Fernandez)
1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nc3 c6 4.Nf3 d5
The Gurgenidze system. The basic idea of this system is to get a closed center, closed flank, closed, well, everything. If Black gets a break in, usually he is better, if not, usually it's a draw. Larry does everything he can to keep the position as open as possible, and to not let Black get rid of his possibly bad Bishop on c8. 5.h3 Nf6 6.Bd3 dxe4 7.Nxe4 Nxe4 8.Bxe4 Bf5 9.Bxf5 Qa5+ 10.c3 Qxf5 11.0-0 [Modern theory tends to prefer 11.Qb3 and doesn't believe in Black's position.] 11...Nd7 [The more pragmatic 11...0-0 may be preferred in the future after the treatment in this game.] 12.Re1 e6 13.Qb3 Qb5?N A very very unfortunate novelty. [13...0-0-0 14.a4 (14.Be3 Nb6 15.c4 h6 16.a4 Qa5 17.Qc2 Qf5 18.Qb3= Bellin - Kushnir, Haifa 1976) 14...Bf6 15.a5 a6 16.c4 g5~~ Kochyev - Zilberman, Cheliabinsk 1975; 13...b6 14.Qa3 a5 15.c4 Bf8 16.Qb3 Bb4 17.Re2 0-0 18.Bg5 h5 19.Qe3+/= Lobron - Gruenfeld, Luzern 1979] And now, Larry sees another barricade worth storming. 14.Rxe6+!? fxe6 15.Qxe6+ Kd8 [15...Kf8 16.Bf4! is rather fatal.] 16.Bg5+ Kc8 17.Re1 Rf8?! 18.Qe7 Kc7? It's not clear why Black has to sacrifice the piece, for example after [18...Rg8 it might be hard to get in, although activating the a8 rook is a problem for Black.] 19.Qxg7 Rxf3 So this is Foygel's idea! He's attacking the g5 bishop too. Unfortunately White has a clever riposte: 20.Re5! Qxb2 21.gxf3 It may seem a little silly to resign in this position, however the fact is that the d7 knight is actually quite soon to perish along the seventh rank. Also, Black's kingside is on the menu. 1-0Miscellaneous Chess News

Geoge Beals Open – july 2001
The George Beals Open is the new name for the annual Canada Day Open tournament organized in recent years by Albert Ede. The name change was suggested by a group of our members to honour one of our long standing players. George Beals, a former NS Champion, now in his eighties, has been playing chess continuously in Halifax for most of his life. As a postal chess enthusiast, George continues to be active in chess even though he only periodically comes out to play in our regular weekend tournaments. The NSCA would like to thank George for his continued support of chess in Nova Scotia over the past 70 years and would like to wish him all the best for the future. International Master Tom O’Donnell from Ottawa participated in this event and to no one’s surprise won the event with a round to spare. Tom finished the tournament with 7.5points which was 1.5 points higher than his nearest competition Alvah Mayo who placed second with 6 points. John Klapstein placed third with 5.5 points. The tournament was held on the TUNS campus of Dalhousie University in downtown Halifax. Geogina Tarrant, originally from Australia, was the top woman player who also ended the event in a tie for fourth place with Laurie Parker and Albert Ede.

Nova Scotia Open – may 2001 The Nova Scotia Open was held in Port Hawkesbury, Cape Breton in May of 2001. This is the first time in a very long time that this tournament was held outside of the Halifax metropolitan area. A smaller than usual number of players turned out for this year’s event but everyone who did attend enjoyed the event. Alvah Mayo took a final round draw to clinch first place. Steve Saunders finished in second place after David Kenney, who was in 2nd place going into the final decided to withdraw. Gerald LeBlanc, Gilbert Bernard, David Kenney and Roger Young all tied for 3rd-6th place. The NSCA would like to thank Gilbert Bernard for organizing and directing this event.

Nova ScotiA Closed chess championship – june 2001 The 2001 Nova Scotia Closed Chess Championship, held in June 2001, had an exciting finish when the two juniors playing in the event both ended tied for first place. However, based on the tie-breaking system used, Tyler Reddy edged out Jason Kenney to be named NS Champion and earned the right to represent NS in the Canadian Closed Zonal Championship. Third place went to Alvah Mayo who was upset by David Kenney in the fourth round. This event was held in a private residence and was therefore not open to spectators. The NSCA plans to hold future NS Closed events in a public place in order that spectators may be able to come out and watch the games.

Lunenburg County Open – april 2001
The fifth annual Lunenburg County Open was held in April 2001 and was run as a two section event. The playing site, Wandlyn Inn in Bridgewater, is a favourite with the local players where they have ample room to play and excellent lighting. This tournament regularly attracts players from out of the province (PEI & NB). At the end, this year’s event was won by Justin Gulati from PEI who is cuurently attending university in Ontario. Second place went to New Brunswick native Richard Bowes and third place went to Aaron Cooper from PEI. Jason Mercer won the Under 1700 Section. Many thanks to Steve Saunders and his volunteers in Bridgewater for always putting on a first class tournament.

Halifax Autumn Tornado – november 2001
David Poirier organized several one-day tornado events last year to give an alternative to the usual three-day swiss tournaments that other organizers have been putting on. The Autumn Tornado tournament was won in convincing fashion by Robert Huber who is a newcomer to NS. Robert recently moved Canada from Germany where he had played extensively in the town chess leagues in that country. I have been advised that he also has a FIDE rating of about 2160. His new provisional CFC rating was calculated as 2230 as a result of this tournament. Michael Eeldridge, Antoni Wysocki, Geogina Tarrant, and Brian McKay followed, tied for 2nd-5th place all with three points.
