NS Chess Meeting

New Officers and Proposals

The annual association meeting produced many changes and suggestions to improve chess in Nova Scotia. Significant duty changes were:

Governors: Alvah Mayo (replacing Kim Tufts)
Bluenose Rep: Christian Rose (replacing Manvinder Singh)
Tournaments: Alvah Mayo and Ed Urquhart (replacing Kim Tufts
Juniors: Cedric Davies (assisting Kim Tufts)
Bluenose Christian Rose Co-ordinator: (replacing Kim Tufts)

-- A new duty was created called "Advertising and Promotion". Alvah Mayo was seconded and will be in charge of promotional events. Such things as securing sponsorship, linking chess with a charity for special events, holding events in public areas such as bars or coffee houses were discussed.

-- Internet -- We'll be using the net to a great degree this year. A schedule for NS and Bluenose events will be up in September, with much more notice for times./ Anyone wishing to find a ride or perhaps a place to stay will be able to advertise there as well (this includes players from other provinces too by the way). / An email list will be maintained and sent out as news becomes available. At present, over 30 NS players have email addresses. / An Internet match between St John -and perhaps Fredericton- and the Bluenose Club will be held sometime in the fall. / Many more uses for the net will be explored throughout the year.

-- Web Site -- Our site is developing into one of the best, if not the best, chess site in Canada. We're receiving compliments from players around the world. Again, many thanks to Steve Saunders for his tireless work here.

-- Tournaments -- It's hoped we will be able to provide players with a schedule of events for the next 9 months, sometime in late September. This should help all players plan ahead./ The NS Open was discussed as being held Remembrance Day weekend, November 8-10 as a 6 Rd event with Open and U1500 sections./ Single day events in Lunenburg, Wolfville and Truro were mentioned as maintaining or creating interest in those areas. As were matches with the Halifax club.

-- Club news -- Some ideas expressed were lectures or simuls lead by the stronger players. / Another idea was a second club in Halifax at Saint Marys. / It is my impression that there are many more chess players out there. The secret would seem to be in getting these players exposed to the game as a competitive rather than merely a casual activity. To that end we'll be targeting the computer, math and physics clubs at the various universities.

-- Regional contacts -- We've made strides over the past year to increase contact with clubs in St John, Moncton, Fredericton and the Miramachi. Although our efforts are producing some progress the increasing awareness that these areas are at least as disorganized if not more so than our own has been rather eye-opening. We almost never receive notice about tournaments in other areas of the Maritimes, which is quite sad. Email or paper mail is not that expensive folks.

Membership Fee increase -- Perhaps the most contentious issue raised, the idea of increasing fees by $5 from $35 to $40 ($28 to $33 for Jrs) in 1997 was mentioned as a way to increase the NS Chess Association's operating budget, which would in effect double it. The chief reason for the increase is that with more capital we can more actively promote chess.

Newsletter: For example, this newsletter is sent out sporadically and is usually fairly limited in content. We could increase the size, guarantee the times when it is sent out, and probably package it on better quality paper. At present each mailing to NS players costs approximately $100, which 5 or 6 times a year adds up. I've tried to minimize the cost to the Association by including these costs in tournaments like the Bluenose Championship and in others. This hardly seems the best way to do things though in my estimation. Promotional events: Other expenses for the Association are Junior and Cadet events. At present we pay a nominal fee for travel expenses and the entry fees for players who travel out of province to represent NS. We may be able to do more here, perhaps increasing the prizes in the provincial championships./ Any special promotional events which arise such as simuls or such could be better covered.

Voting: This initiative will not be carried out arbitrarily. The players I've spoken with so far about this have been in favour of it. We will have a vote on it at the NS Open in November. If you cannot attend or disagree strongly with it, we encourage you to voice your opinion to either myself Kim Tufts, Steve Saunders or Alvah Mayo. We do not want players to "disappear" because of it.

NS Chess Association Financial Statement: Gordon Giacomin (CMA) will produce an accounting for us of our recent expenses and total funds available. (See page 8)

1996 Maritime Open

August 2-4, Dalhousie University

Although forty-seven players in three sections competed - normally a very good number for a summer chess event in our region - I was disappointed both by the number of players from outside NS and the relative abscence of expert-rated or higher players. Perhaps a spate of unusually hot weather that holiday weekend in what had been a rather dismal summer had something to do with it. Let's hope so anyway. Or perhaps I'm just never satisfied. The format change this year proved to be quite popular with the players present though .

The winners in the Open section were Glenn Charlton on tie-break over Ed Urquhart, both of NS. Glenn got the trophy but each won $300. Their fourth round game resulted in a very tense draw. Charlton, as Black, pressed Urquhart almost off the board, with Ed having to put 6 pieces on the back rank to avert disaster. Only a central push at just the right moment quelled the attack , regaining some space and levelling the game. Mike Guignard of NB was the top U2000 player with 3.5/5.

Lewis Brown (NS) was the surprising winner in the U1800 section. At 1580, Lewis played solidly, defeating higher rated players three times and was undefeated in the tournament. George Beals (NS) took 2nd.

Renaud Laforge (NB) and Murray Copage (NS) were tops in the U1600 section.

The most improved prize was awarded to Bill Pettipas of Halifax. His rating soared over 300 points in 1995-96. Bill received the new Informant book 640 Golden Games, a collection of the best games of the past 30 years. The August issue of the newsletter was distributed to the players in attendence.

North Bay International Open

August 7-11

North Bay was again a major success in Canadian chess with 310 players taking part and a very strong field. This year's edition solidified its growing reputation as the best tournament in North America of its kind.

The winners in the open section were GM Ivan Morovic and GM Patrick Wolff (7/8); IM Alexandre Lesiege, GM Alexander Wojtkiewicz, GM Reynaldo Vera, and IM Sofia Polgar (6.5/8).

Many players from our region took part. All the crosstables from each section are available at the CFC web site. A quick perusal came up with these scores:

Open
Billy Peckford 3.5 (formerly of NS)
U2200
Paul LeBlanc 4.0 (formerly of NS)
U2000
Alvah Mayo 4.5 NS
Justin Gulati 5.0 PEI
Ben Matheson 3.0 NB
Eric Bertrand 3.0 NB
U1800
Cedric Davies 5.0 NS
Gilbert Bernard 3.0 NS
Bruce Fleury 2.5 NS
George Hensel 3.5 NS
Hector Grant 3.5 NB
U1600
Jacques Bertrand 3.0 NB
Patrick Goguen 4.0 NB
Victor Goguen 3.5 NB
Some players were disappointed by their scores. Alvah scored 4/4 with Black only to score a miserable 0.5/4 with White. Gilbert won his first two games only to lose his third from a superior position and could never recover. Perhaps most disappointed was Billy Peckford who started with an IM norm in sight, winning his first, drawing with GM Wolff, defeating FM Ristovic, and drawing IM Day. Then the wheels fell off as he lost a winning game against FM Karklins, and even withdrew later on. Here are some happier moments:

Alvah relayed some other highlights such as meeting Patrick Wolff in the CFC bookstore. And a photo of Gilbert with his arm around Sofia Polgar is said to be in existence (Gilbert is the Deen Hergott of NS chess in that respect!). [Webmaster's note see the North Bay International Open web page pictures on this site!]

Jayson Gonzales of the Phillipines scored an IM norm, a rare feat in a Canadian tournament. And Alaa-Eddine Moussa of Quebec narrowly missed a norm as well.

1996 Canadian National Chess Championship

Toronto, August 14-29

GM Kevin Spragett won his 5th closed title, winning in 1984, 1986, 1989 and 1994. BC's Yan Teplitsky came second, and also garnered the IM title. Teplitsky, a recent Russian emigre, has not lost a single game in Canada, and at only 20 years of age is, along with Lesiege, our best bet for a GM title (although Lesiege's absence was mysterious..) Ron Livshits gained the IM title as well and tied for 3rd-4th with Lawrence Day. Our representative Joe Horton did not have a good event as he finished last. Lack of serious play and a less than impressive win at the Atlantic Closed probably played a part in his poor result.

The prizes: 1st $1500 Kevin Spragett
                2nd 1000 Yan Teplitsky

Canadian Women's Championship

Toronto, August 17-25

Johanne Charest (1964) of Montreal was the surprising winner of this year's event, scoring 7.5/9 and defeating perennial winner Nava Starr (2270) in their encounter, who finished second (6.5). Nathalia Khoudgarian (2213) was third (6).

Rounding out the field were:

Stefanie Chu, Diane Mongeau 5.5
Penka Apostolov 4.5
Vesma Baltgailis 4.0
Smilja Vujosevic, Beatrice Wu 2.0
Erin Walker 1.0

The World vs Karpov

Anatoli Karpov challenged all Internet users to a chess game on August 26. His opponents had 7 minutes to email their response to the Finnish web site sponsoring this exhibition , with the move getting the largest number of "votes" selected. The event gained quite a lot of press and may have been in response to the announcement that Kasparov will face DeepBlue again next year.

As for the game itself...well, the World is apparently full of patzers. Many thanks to Arthur Grant for submitting the game.

Ed Urquhart breezed to win the 12th annual Pictou County Chess Challenge, claiming the $150 1st prize. Tied 2nd-4th were Steve Saunders, Jim Hayward and newcomer Andrew Wallbank. Andrew was also the top U1700 player.

Interestingly, this event didn't use sudden-death time controls and only one game went to adjournment. Alvah Mayo noted though that as TD he felt such events were only feasible during long weekends and if there was a demand for it. And perhaps also if there are small enough numbers in each section to avoid unforeseen circumstances, such as Ed having to take a last round bye because of a last minute scheduling change. If you have an opinion on sudden-death controls voice them to the tournament organizers.

Master Rating

Robert Villeneuve's new CFC rating of exactly 2200 makes him the first NS player to achieve such a rating since Billy Peckford in the late'80's. Congratulations Rob!

And Ed Urquhart is fast closing in as well. I've also heard from two Masters from Upper Canada who may be relocating to NS in 1997. Things are definitely picking up.

Funny Ratings

Some of you may have noticed that the new ratings from the Maritime Open do not always seem derived from the pre-event and performance levels. The reason for this is that in many cases they aren't. Other tournaments in the interim, matches, etc are the chief cause. The ratings listed in "new" will be the ones players see in the October list in their issue of "En Passant".

Chess Supplies

There is one store in metro who sells decent chess equipment. The Games Room in the Halifax Shopping Mall sells chess tubes and dedicated computers from the CFC. The prices are somewhat higher but the convenience is appreciated.
