Concertina on the South Coast of Newfoundland, 18 July 2006


Four weeks along the South Coast of Newfoundland aboard the “Concertina” from mid-July to mid-August 2006.
Tuesday, 18 July 2006	Kings Harbour to Grey River Northwest Arm; A gray day for the beat to Grey River.
	Our plans for a bath in the stream were dampened when it began to rain this morning. At the same time, it became apparent that the anchor was dragging upstream. We found the anchor badly fouled as we had been caught between the easterly breezes and the opposing stream current.
	The morning began foggy with occasional showers as we headed out under power with sails set and a single reef in the main for a beat to windward. The weather improved, and as the afternoon wore on we caught glimpses of bold headlands ahead.
	We passed within a mile of Ramea Island, which was shrouded in fog.
	By late afternoon we spotted the beacon marking the break in the cliffs that was the entrance to Grey River and then proceeded in under power through the chop set up by the tidal outflow.
	The fjord-like passage inland is a calm contrast to the sea weather just outside the headlands.
	There is a bay-like body of water a few miles in from which a number of arms spread out east, northeast and northwest. This view is up the NE Arm that leads into the salmon fishing stream that is Grey River itself.
	We headed into the NW Arm and found good holding in 2 fathoms of water, not too distant from the Norwegian ketch “Christiania”, which we had last seen in Baddeck.
