What You Need to Play in Chess Tournaments in Nova Scotia!

Before you can play in a chess tournament in Nova Scotia, you will have to join the Chess Federation of Canada . This is because most tournaments in Nova Scotia are rated by the Chess Federation of Canada. Each time you play in a rated tournament, the CFC will track your performance and give you a rating. Your rating will be a four digit number calculated from your wins, losses and draws and from the rating of your opponents. Your rating will be published every time it changes, in the Chess Federation of Canada's magazine, En Passant. It will move up and down like a thermometer, depending upon how well you play.

You can join the Chess Federation of Canada at chess tournaments. As a member of the CFC you'll automatically receive a subscription to En Passant and will be able to purchase chess materials and books from the CFC at a good price.

Rated tournaments are played with a chess clock. A chess clock is a device for measuring the time you and your opponent spend thinking between moves. Chess clocks are usually available at tournaments Chess clocks ensure a fair use of time. If you have a chess clock or chess set, bring it to the tournament. There's normally enough clocks available if you don't have one.

You will be required to record the moves in your game as it is played using a chess notation. Nearly any chess book will explain chess notation to you.

    Above all, have fun!
