The Culture of Orchids
There are in the order of 25,000 orchid species that grow in just about every type of environment on this planet. Different orchids grow in climates of very cold to very hot and very dry to very wet and all the combinations. Some come from the cloud forest where it is cool and damp all year round and others endure a monsoon climate of months of heat with no rain followed by so much rain that never ends.
Some orchids, like the Phalaenopsis, have been bred to be easy to grow in the average home. However, the nice thing about growing orchids is that there is always another type of orchid to give you a challenge. There is always a source of pride in being able to grow and bloom the more difficult orchids.
The COC has prepared a set of culture sheets to assist Canadian growers in getting the best out of their plants.
