2nd Sunday of Lent - March 4, 2012
Peter, James, and John witness Jesus' transfiguration. But they themselves also undergo a transfiguration. Some change occurs within them so they are able to hear God's voice announcing Jesus' identity (''beloved Son") and the clear terms of their own discipleship ("listen to him"). Lent is meant to be our time of transfiguration. What change needs to occur in us so that we grasp the clear terms of our own discipleship? What change needs to occur in us so that we truly listen? Abraham obeyed God's command to sacrifice even his only son Isaac, and for that obedience God promised Abraham abundant blessings and countless descendants (which is to say, continued life through his offspring). Our own obedience to God ("listen to him") brings us the blessing of life in Christ (2nd reading), which is to say, eternal life. The pressures of life often keep us from taking the time to stop and listen—to each other, to ourselves, and to God. But only by taking the time to listen can we grow in our relationships, in our quality of life, in self-understanding, and in discipleship.
F.O.O.D. Project
Next weekend (March 10 and 11) is our next committed weekend to provide meals for Feeding Others Of Dartmouth. Sign-up sheets are posted in the main entrance of the church where someone from Parish Outreach is on hand to answer any questions you may have about how you can serve. Your compassionate help is appreciated by the many in our community who benefit from this service.
Development & Peace
The theme for this year’s Share Lent campaign is: Help a Just World Take Root. Last Sunday we had attached to the bulletin the Solidarity Calendar asking the question “What resources must we preserve so that justice and the crops of the Earth can grow?” Perhaps you had a few moments to read about how D&P partners in the Global South are creating a world of justice for the landless peasants in Brazil and reflect on these services to the marginalized. Today (see attached) is a Solidarity Card describing the results of our solidarity and partnership with the Cambodian village of Tareach, Kampot.
Today is the first collection for D&P.
Envelopes were included with the regular Sunday collection package; additional ones are available at the entrances to the church along with copies of the Share Lent mini-magazine. Our generosity during Share Lent is a sign of our compassion and solidarity for our sisters and brothers in the Global South.
Special Lenten Event - Solidarity Meal
Mark your calendar. On Tuesday, March 27, you are invited to a special D&P event, planned in partnership with our Liturgy Committee. That evening we will gather in the Parish Hall for a Solidarity Meal followed by a Liturgy of the Word with the theme of Social Justice which will include a presentation by D&P on their experiences helping to upraise the landless in Brazil. This event will be appropriate for all ages and families are encouraged to attend. See more details in an upcoming bulletin.
