4th Sunday of Lent - March 18, 2012

Such depth of God's love this Gospel reveals: God gave his only .. Son, allowed the only Son to be "lifted up" on a cross, and now remains patient with us while we struggle with choosing between darkness and light, evil and truth. Moreover, in the very midst of our ongoing struggle, it is God who brings us to greater belief and leads us to eternal life. Such is the depth of love God has for us! The second reading also reveals "the great love with which [God] loved us." Further, while the second reading affirms that we are "saved through faith," it also makes clear that this faith itself "is the gift of God." More love! How devastating it is for a child to grow up without knowing love! We human beings need love to become whole. Without the experience of loving one another, how can we come to experience God's love for us?

Sacrament of Reconciliation

to Be Celebrated on Thursday Evening

This Thursday, March 22 at 7pm, we will gather here at St. Peter Church with members of neighbouring parishes for our Lenten Sacrament of Reconciliation service after which there will be opportunities for private confession.

Other services in our region will be at Blessed Pope John XXIII on Wednesday, March 28 at 7pm and St. Anselm on Thursday, March 29 at 7pm.

Come and Journey

Women’s Lenten Day of Reflection Next Saturday

The Catholic Women’s League invites women of the parish to be part of this special Day of Reflection facilitated by Sister Cecelia.  As we enter the fourth week of Lent, here is an opportunity to refocus on the meaning of this season.  Listen to two talks:

‘Where Am I on the Journey?’

and

‘Praying While on the Journey’

The sessions will be held in the parish hall beginning at 10am and ending at 3pm.  You will reflect quietly on these themes and enjoy a delicious lunch provided by the CWL.  Also you will appreciate spending time to get to know other parishioners better as you respond to this invitation to a retreat day.  Please call the office with your intention to attend by the afternoon of Wednesday, March 21.

Religious Education Notes

Due to the March Break there will be no Religious Education classes this Sunday for Primary to Grade 6, EDGE and Confirmation.

Classes will resume NEXT SUNDAY at their usual times.

The Enrollment Rite for the Candidates who are preparing for First Communion will take place at the 8:45 Mass on Sunday, March 25 followed by an information session for parents with Sister Cecelia

in the parish hall.

Prayer Line

We remind you that we have an active Prayer Line network in the parish.  If you have a friend or family member who is seriously ill contact the office at ext 222 and leave a name.

Special Lenten Event

Solidarity (Poverty) Meal

Tuesday, March 27

Mark your calendar.  On Tuesday, March 27, at 5:30pm you are invited to a special D&P event, planned in partnership with our Liturgy Committee.  That evening we will gather in the Parish Hall for a Solidarity (Poverty) Meal followed by a Liturgy of the Word with the theme of Social Justice which will include a presentation by D&P on their experiences helping to upraise the landless who live precariously.  This event will be appropriate for all ages and families are encouraged to attend.  See more details in next week’s bulletin.

Second Collection for D&P Today

Today is our second collection for D&P.  Envelopes were included with the regular Sunday collection package; additional ones are available at the entrances to the church.

Your generosity during Share Lent is a sign of your compassion and solidarity with our sisters and brothers in areas of the world where people struggle under many hardships to create a better life for themselves and their families.

Attachment to the Bulletin

Please take a few moments to review the Solidarity Card attached to the bulletin.  It describes the community gardens developed by a long time D&P partner in Camagong Cabusao south of Manila, the capital of the Philippines.

LITURGICAL NOTES

The Sung Parts of the Mass

You may have noticed the introduction of a new setting of the ‘Lamb of God’.  It is found in the new Celebrate in Song hymn book at number 2.6 as part of the musical setting for Mass written by Geoffrey S. Angeles.  Upon the introduction of the new Mass Setting at the beginning of Advent, it was felt that we could wait until Lent to intro the Lamb of God given that there was already much newness.  As it happens, the Lamb of God is one of our sung prayers for which the text was not revised.  Keep singing!  The Holy Holy, Memorial Acclamation and Great Amen are becoming more familiar with every Sunday celebration.  Of course we don’t sing the Gloria during Lent, but will enjoy its return during the Holy Triduum.

Sign-up sheets for the Holy Triduum services are now available

in the sacristy.

Second Scrutiny

The RCIA process in our parish welcomes the Elect, those desirous of Baptism, to further their initiation process at the 11:15 Mass by participation in the prayers of the Second Scrutiny.  The word Scrutiny denotes a period of self-searching, repentance and a time to deepen their resolve to be Baptized into Christ’s Mystical Body at Easter.  Today, Eva Jacqueline Bone, Hayley Bone and Nikki Jean Brown will continue in this process.  (Gayle Carolan is unable to be with us this morning)

St. Vincent de Paul

Please remember your contributions of non perishable food items for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.  Your thoughtfulness enables the Society to continue the work of feeding those who struggle to make ends meet.  Daily, the members of the Society bring food to those in need.  Your contributions are necessary to make this work.  You may bring food to church and leave it in the basket in the foyer or drop it off at the office during regular office hours.

Grief Support Group

Join us for prayer, support and friendship. The Grief Support Group meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7pm.  Contact Sister Cecelia.

GODSPELL Rehearsals

Rehearsals for cast this week are Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at 6:30, and Saturday at 9:30am.  The junior cast rehearses on Tuesday at 3:30.  Band rehearses Saturday at noon.

Children and Senior Choirs

There is no senior choir rehearsal on Wednesday evening.  The children rehearse at the usual 4pm Wednesday time.  The Saturday group meets at 3pm in the music room.

Exterior Door Refinishing Continues

You have noticed over the past couple months the removal, refinishing and reinstallation of several of the exterior sets of doors.  The process continued this past week with the removal of the set at the end of the laneway on the southwest side of the church.

Fundraising continues for the automated electric wheelchair accessible doors to be installed on the northeast side near the tabernacle.  We are grateful to the committed team that continues to raise funds and awareness.

The parish is also thankful for the generous donation of $1000 to this cause received from the Catholic Women’s League.
