Palm Sunday - April 1, 2012
Who reveals the identity of Jesus? Ironically, it is from enemies and foreigners that we come to understand who Jesus is. The religious leaders ask Jesus if he is "the Christ, the son of the Blessed One." Pilate condemns him because he is the "king of the Jews." But the Roman centurion confesses this man to be "God’s Son" As we stand this day at the foot of the cross, what do we come to understand about who Jesus is? The hymn from the Letter to the Philippians reveals even more about the identity of Jesus. He is the humble One, the obedient One, the exalted One, the Lord, and the Glory of God. We spend a lifetime coming to a deeper appreciation for the identity of another person, even someone as close to us as a parent, a sibling, a spouse. It is no surprise, then, that coming to a fuller appreciation of the identity of Jesus is likewise a lifetime process.
Development & Peace
Third Collection for D&P this Sunday
Today is the 3rd and final collection for D&P. Envelopes are located at the entrances of the church.
Canadian International Development Agency
Reduces Annual Contribution
“The Brazilian agrarian structure requires major changes if we want a freer and more democratic country.” Says Jose Gomes Neto, Secretary, Pastoral Land Commission (CPT), a D&P partner. The CPT is helping small farmers become self-sufficient and take control of their lives. Your contributions will help these small producers “take root”. This year, the importance of Share Lent is crucial, as last week we were informed that the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has reduced its annual contribution by approximately $5 million, meaning our budget may have to be reduced by 26%. The $5 million must be found if D&P is to maintain support for its 186 projects in 30 countries.
Your generosity during Share Lent is a great sign of the compassion you have and solidarity you feel with our sisters and brothers in areas of the world where people struggle under many hardships to create a better life for themselves and their families.
– Solidarity (Poverty) Meal –
Our gratitude goes out to all who contributed their time and energy to realize the Solidarity Meal last Tuesday in an effort to raise awareness of the difficulties experienced by people who live with much less than ourselves.
Religious Education Notes
Classes continue at their usual times.
The Enrollment Rite for the Candidates who are preparing for First Holy Communion (May 6, 8:45 Mass) took place last Sunday. Please keep these children and their families and teachers in your prayers.

more effective treatments. Once again, thank you for your participation.
GODSPELL Rehearsals
Rehearsals for cast this week are on Tuesday only. Junior cast at 3:30pm, senior cast at 6:30pm. Rehearsals thereafter are suspended during Holy Week and the Triduum and will resume on Tuesday, April 10 at the usual times.
Children and Senior Choirs
There is no senior choir rehearsal this week. The children will rehearse as usual on Wednesday afternoon after school.
Exterior Door Refinishing Continues
You have noticed over the past couple months the removal, refinishing and reinstallation of several of the exterior sets of doors. The process continues with the removal of the set at the end of the laneway on the southwest side of the church.
Fundraising continues for the automated electric wheelchair accessible doors to be installed on the northeast side near the tabernacle. We are grateful to the committed team that continues to raise funds and awareness.
The parish is also thankful for the generous donation of $1000 to this cause received from the Catholic Women’s League.
Liturgical Notes
The Revised Roman Missal and Celebrate in Song
We are very pleased with our transition to the renewed text of the Revised Roman Missal. We encourage you to continue using the prayer cards when necessary during our celebrations.
You have noticed the inclusion of new hymn settings in the Celebrate in Song book. The choir is using many of these new songs and encourages you to be engaged with their beautiful texts and melodies. The hymn songs used during Communion have easily sung refrains which we hope you will sing while in procession to receive. The action of singing helps unify the community at that time.
Lay Ministers Needed for Triduum Services
There is still required commitment from Lay Ministers for service at some liturgies during the Triduum. Particularly take note of the need on Easter Sunday morning. The sign-up sheets are in the sacristy.
Holy Thursday Washing of Feet
Consider being part of this ritual at Mass on Holy Thursday. At that liturgy Fr. Jim and Sr. Cecelia will offer to wash the feet of parishioners and so represent the service and charity of Christ, who came ‘not to be served, but to serve’. You will be invited at the appropriate time after the homily that evening to come forward and participate.
Flowers to Adorn Our Worship Space
It is fitting that during the Easter Season we adorn our beautiful worship space with flowers. If you would like to contribute a potted flowering plant, perhaps in memory of a loved one who has gone before us, simply drop it off at the office during regular office hours, or bring it to the church on Holy Saturday between noon and 2pm when folks will be preparing the worship space for the Easter celebrations. If in memory of a loved one, please ensure that their name is included with the gift of the plant. Thank you.
HELP! decorate the church
We could use your help for an hour or so on Holy Saturday when folks come together to prepare the church for the Easter celebrations. Meet at noon in the church. One of the big pieces is the placement of the Baptismal Font (temporary) as we do each year. Other tasks include fabric banner placements, flower arrangements and more.
