3rd Sunday of Easter - April 22, 2012

How concrete Jesus is in leading the disciples to experience and believe in his Resurrection! In this Gospel he comes to them where they are, he invites them to touch his risen body, and he eats a "piece of baked fish."  How patiently Jesus brings the disciples into the mystery of his risen life! How patiently he brings us into this same mystery: he comes to us where we are; he touches us with his forgiveness; and he invites us to come to his table, feeding us with his risen Body. He is alive! Peter is able to witness to the reality of Jesus' Resurrection and call his hearers to repentance because he himself has experienced repentance and forgiveness, and the new life this brings. In our judicial system the most credible witnesses are eyewitnesses close to the event. We are eyewitnesses to the Resurrection of Jesus—even though we are far removed from the historical event—when we recognize the Risen Lord among and within us, forgive and seek forgiveness of one another, and faithfully feast at his table. He is alive!

The Easter Season

Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Easter is a season for rejoicing in the new creation God has brought about in the Resurrection of Christ.

Death no longer has the last word!

May the risen Lord continue to bring joy and peace

into your hearts and homes today

and throughout the Easter season.

The 50 Days...

...from Easter Sunday to Pentecost Sunday.

Although this time is considered one feast and is called the Great Sunday, we observe several significant moments.  We began at the Vigil and on Easter Sunday with a robust return of the Alleluia, a song of joy and praise that Christ is risen; he has conquered death, and we delight in the full participation of the newly initiated.  The Sunday celebrations are a form of experiential catechesis about the meaning of the Fifty Days for the entire community.  The Easter symbols of the white vestments, the presence of the Paschal candle and the use of water are tangible signs of Baptism and of the new life we celebrate.

Expressed another way, ‘The Fifty Days is primarily a span for acknowledging and celebrating the gifts of the Father, wrought to humanity by the generative breath of the Holy Spirit, who swept over the face of the earth at the creation of the world; who renews, animates, and sustains the world; who filled the place where Mary conceived the incarnate Son and the places where she, the apostles and Christians have since gathered; and who ever builds up the Church with the initiation of new members, its neophytes.  The Fifty Day time is an opportunity for the newly Baptized and the long-ago Baptized to give thanks to the Source of all things for their vocations in and as the Church.”

Impact Halifax

Catholic Christian Outreach will bring 60 young missionaries to Halifax for 14 weeks this summer. They will operate in teams of four-six persons per parish. One team will be connected with our parishes, (St. Peter and Immaculate Conception.) One missionary, Maria Arsenault, a member of our parish has raised the funds needed to participate. There are others, however, who have not been able to do so. (Each participant needs to raise $3,100.00 to cover costs of lodging, food, etc). If you would like to help support a CCO member take part in Impact Halifax, any contribution would be gladly accepted. Please find a copy of Maria’s letter and a donation form at the church entrances. I endorse this effort and look forward to the young people being with us this summer.  Fr. Jim
