11th Sunday of Ordinary Time - June 17, 2012

This is how it is," Jesus says in this gospel.  Yet there is no single way to describe the "kingdom of God."  Here Jesus uses two similar parables to teach us that the kingdom is realized in the intersection of our own work (plant the seed) with God's work (the mystery of life growing and bearing fruit). The Good News is that God's kingdom is assured — the scattered seed will yield a harvest; the tiny seed will grow into a large plant. "This is [really] how it is"! The 1st reading describes all the work God does to bring forth life. The gospel tells us that this life is the kingdom of God become visible and fruitful. Much of what we do successfully every day depends upon our cooperation with others. Making visible God's kingdom is first of all the work of God, but isn't it wonderful that God chooses to invite us to cooperate in this great work!

Father’s Day Blessing

To all fathers of our parish, may you have a joy-filled day as you celebrate your special vocation.  May God bless you in all you do in the care and love of your children, and may God’s blessing guide and strengthen you today and always.  May our fathers who have completed life’s earthly journey rest in peace.

Welcome Deacon Bernie Young!

One of the newly ordained deacons, Bernie Young has been assigned by Archbishop Mancini to Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Immaculate Conception Parishes. We welcome him this weekend and look forward to his ministry among us. Bernie is an educator at CFB Halifax and lives with his wife Karen in Mineville. A father of four grown children, and grandfather, he is also a serious cyclist. Bernie will be involved in RCIA ministry, pastoral care and parish outreach as well as liturgical parishes. Welcome Deacon Bernie.

<<<  Nominations  >>>

Parish Administrative Council:

We are in need of four new members this year. Do you know a parishioner who you wish to serve in this way?  Nomination forms are available at the church entrances.  All those nominated will be contacted.  Please place nominations in box provided for this purpose.

St. Vincent de Paul

Please remember your contributions of non perishable food items for the St. Vincent de Paul Society during the summer months.  Your thoughtfulness enables the Society to continue the work of feeding those who struggle to make ends meet.  Daily, the members of the Society bring food to those in need.  Your contributions are necessary to make this work.  You may bring food to church and leave it in the basket in the foyer or drop it off at the office during regular office hours.

Car Wash to Support Steubenville 2012

A car wash will take place next Saturday, June 23

at St. Peter Parish from 4 to 6pm. (Hey, what a thought.  Come for Mass on Saturday, leave your car in their capable hands, and have it clean and ready to roll at 6pm!)

The Bluenose Bottle Exchange:

IMPACT:  in your parish

Discovery Faith Study to Resume on July 3

Another round of the Discovery Faith Study sessions begins on July 3, a Tuesday evening at 7:30.

Impact Students Seeking Employment

Last Sunday we made you aware that some of the IMPACT team students (five of whom are in our midst) continue to search for jobs.  Of course as you know for many young people, seeking employment is a challenging prospect, especially in this economy.  If you know of any job opportunities or summer employment potentials please call or email the parish office.  The team members would happily accept small day jobs and the like:  landscaping, domestic stuff (you know, cleaning out the attic or basement or garage).

Support for the IMPACT Team

Many of you generously gave small appliances and household items when the IMPACT team arrived, and they thank you warmly for that.  While they continue to settle and mission in our parish, they would graciously accept grocery store gift cards to help with those essentials.  Thank you for your generous support.

CORNERSTONE:

A Call to Young Adults

Every Thursday at St Agnes church on Mumford Road at 7:30pm, younger people ages 16 and above are invited to join in CORNERSTONE for faith sharing, skits, talks by interesting speakers, music and refreshments.  Come along and see what it’s all about!

During the months of July and August the parish office will be closed on Fridays. The office will be open Monday to Thursday at the regular time of 9am to 4pm.

Notes on Liturgical Practice:

Liturgy of the Word:

Apostles’ Creed and Nicene Creed

Since the beginning of Advent we have incorporated many changes into our liturgical practice.  We have adapted well.  During the Liturgy of the Word, one change in the assembly’s words is found in the Profession of Faith.  Remember the sentence structure has been changed to match the sentence structure in the Latin.  Many of you have asked about the changes to the text of the Apostles’ Creed.  Formerly we said: He descended to the dead.  Currently we say:  He descended into hell.  In this context the word ‘hell’ translates the Latin phrase: ad inferos.  It does not refer to the place of the damned, or the abode of Satan.  Rather, it refers to the dwelling place of the righteous who died before Christ.  The Risen Lord descended to this place to draw these people up to share in his victory over sin and death.  Many Eastern icons beautifully express this doctrine by depicting the Risen Lord, standing on top of the grave, reaching down to pull Adam and Eve by the hand and raise them to share his glorious victory.

In the Nicene Creed, there are a few significant word changes.  First of all, the prayer begins with: I believe, instead of: We believe.  The new translation matches the Latin: Credo.  Even though the Nicene Creed originally began with ‘We believe’ it has traditionally begun with ‘I believe’ when used in the liturgy.  St. Thomas Aquinas explains it this way: when we pray in the liturgy, we pray as one body.  Therefore, ‘I believe’ is fitting.

Three other new words or phrases appear in the Nicene Creed.  The only Son of the Father now reads: the Only-Begotten Son, born of the Father before all ages. This translates the Latin: Filium Deo Unigenitum and makes clear the unique sonship of Christ.  We are all adopted sons and daughters by virtue of our Baptism.  Christ is the only-begotten Son of the Father.

The second new word is ‘consubstantial’.  Instead of saying: one in being with the Father, as before, we now say: consubstantial with the Father.  This translates the Latin: consubstantialem Patri, and expresses the true divinity of

Christ.

And finally, instead of saying: by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary as before, we say: and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary.  This translates the Latin: Et incarnates est de Spiritus Sancto ex Maria Virgine.  The word ‘incarnate’ is an important theological word which expresses our belief in the humanity of Christ and echoes the words of the prologue of St. John’s Gospel:  And the Word became flesh and lived among us (John 1.14).  Note as well that it is suggested that we bow during the recitation of this passage.

Please continue to refer to the prayer cards found in the pew if necessary.  The texts of the Nicene and Apostles’ Creeds are also found in the Celebrate in Song hymnal on pages 16 and 17.

Music in Worship

As we mentioned last week, the Celebrate in Song hymnal contains the settings we use for the Gloria, Holy Holy Holy, Memorial Acclamation, Amen and Lamb of God.  Found at numbers 2.2 – 2.6 consecutively, they are intended for everyone’s use.  Don’t deny yourself the opportunity to be fully engaged in the singing of these Mass parts.  As well, our choirs continue to introduce new hymns (often called chants) for Communion, Preparation of the altar Table / Presentaton of the Gifts, and at other times during Mass.  Keep singing and make our celebrations even more active, engaged and exuberant!

A Heartfelt Thank You from Fr. Charlie

I would like to thank the parishioners of  St. Peter for their kindness during my 50th Anniversary observance.  Many of you were present at the Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Thomas More, others sent greeting cards and notes.  Special thanks to St. Peter Catholic Women’s League.  Your thoughtfulness and generosity is much appreciated.     May God bless you all!
