16th Sunday of Ordinary Time - July 22, 2012

In the Gospel last Sunday Jesus commissioned his twelve apostles to go heal sick persons, free others from unclean spirits, and to proclaim the gospel of repentance to all. Apparently their mission was very successful because this week we read that Jesus was now becoming famous as crowds of people begin to form around him and the apostles. However, their success left the apostles feeling fatigued and in need of rest, so Jesus calls them away to a deserted place. In the quiet and emptiness of the desert, away from the hectic distractions of the towns the apostles will find refreshment for their souls. In the desert the apostles will encounter the Spirit of the living God who alone gives rest. In the spiritual life of every Christian there needs to be desert experiences, periods of time when we encounter God in quiet and emptiness. Contemporary society often requires men and women to lead very hectic lives; and the modern world offers a lot of distracting entertainment and excitement. It becomes almost impossible to encounter God in the midst of such social noise. However, for our own wellbeing, Jesus still calls his followers away from the unnecessary noise of the world, to make time and space for quiet and refreshment. Personal prayer, spiritual reading, and of course lots of sleep! All are necessary for a healthy spiritual life. Jesus calls us to these good practices so that we too may be refreshed by the Spirit of the living God.

This weekend we are happy to welcome

Fr. Craig Cameron

... in our midst to preside at our Saturday (anticipated) and Sunday liturgical celebrations.  As you know, Fr. Craig was ordained to the priesthood in the month of May and celebrated with us shortly after.  He is taking up residence in the Annapolis Valley where he will serve the faithful in that area of our diocese.  Welcome Fr. Craig!

Feed Others Of Dartmouth (FOOD)

During the summer months, the outreach work of Feed Others Of Dartmouth continues.  Our parish has accepted ongoing responsibility to provide meals for the patrons of Margaret House on the second weekend of each month.  Please keep the needs of those who have difficulty providing for themselves foremost in your mind.  Our next committed weekend is August 11/12.

St. Vincent de Paul

Please remember your contributions of non perishable food items for the St. Vincent de Paul Society during the summer months.  Your thoughtfulness enables the Society to continue the work of feeding those who struggle to make ends meet.  Daily, the members of the Society bring food to those in need.  Your contributions are necessary to make this work.  You may bring food to church and leave it in the basket in the foyer or drop it off at the office during regular office hours.

Parish Office hours

During the months of July and August the parish office is closed on Fridays. The office is open Monday to Thursday at the regular time of 9am to 4pm.

Bulletin

The next bulletin will be published on August 12.  That Sunday, the diocese will publish their one time summer issue.  We will supplement with pertinent parish information.

CORNERSTONE:

A Call to Young Adults

Every Thursday at St. Agnes Church on Mumford Road at 7:30pm, young people of all ages are invited to join in CORNERSTONE for faith sharing, skits, talks by interesting speakers, music and refreshments.  Come along and see what it’s all about!

Sacrament of Marriage

Christian Pluta and Sylvie Pluta (nee Gagne), members of Mission de la Sainte-Famille, will celebrate the Convalidation of their Marriage on Saturday, August 4.  Please keep this couple in your prayers as they take the important step of committing themselves to each other in the Sacrament of Marriage.

Notes on Liturgical Practice:

In recent bulletins we refreshed some of the ideas behind normal liturgical practices adopted since the changes to the Roman Missal were introduced last fall.  Some of those changes are felt most during the time when we receive Holy Communion.

Again, it is appropriate before you receive to make a simple gesture of a bow of your head as a sign of your preparedness.  After you receive and return to your seat, it is appropriate to remain standing until all have received.  At that time, you may sit or kneel as you wish.

Music in Worship

The Celebrate in Song hymnal contains the settings we use for the Gloria, Holy Holy Holy, Memorial Acclamation, Amen and Lamb of God.  Found at numbers 2.2 – 2.6 consecutively, they are intended for everyone’s use.  Don’t deny yourself the opportunity to be fully engaged in the singing of these Mass parts.  As well, our choirs continue to introduce new hymns (often called chants) for Communion, Preparation of the altar Table / Presentaton of the Gifts, and at other times during Mass.  Keep singing and make our celebrations even more active, engaged and exuberant!

Summer Mass Schedule

Saturday (Anticipated): 5pm    Sundays: 9:30am and 7pm

CHALICE

CHALICE is a Catholic charity that primarily supports community initiatives in developing countries through the sponsorship of children and elderly in need.  As a ministry within the Catholic community, their mission is to create and nurture caring relationships of life and love wherever they serve.  CHALICE has scored very well when compared to other charities, especially in the categories of International Aid & Development, Overall Efficiency, Fundraising Efficiency and Governance and Transparency.

Our parish supports three youth through CHALICE.  We have supported Mohana Munda of Orissa, India since 2007.  He wrote to us during March and is thankful for the assistance he has received.  Mohana was recently promoted to the next grade in his school, and though he admits a weakness in Mathematics and English, he is resolved to improve next year.

In 2008, the parish accepted responsibility for Maria Isabel Rojas Morales of Chiclayo, Peru.  CHALICE reports that Maria has benefitted greatly from our support.  She is gaining confidence and trust in her family and community, and has become more communicative.  Her parents are participating in workshops and are becoming more responsible with her upbringing.

And then there is Sabina Richard, a 10 year old in Tanzania, who has been supported by the proceeds generated by the Drama Group since 2008.  Sabina attends primary school and is doing well.  She has written recently in a letter of her gratitude for the help received.

The children of the parish put coins in the CHALICE can near the ambo during the time when the collection is taken up during the liturgy.  Please use these references to educate them about the children they sponsor and commend them for their charitable spirits.  Take them to the CHALICE website at www.ccare.ca

Many of you are sponsoring a child, or even more than one, in one of the 15 countries where CHALICE operates.  Thank you for showing your concern for the well being of God’s children.

Parish Directory Available

Believe it or not, there are still some parish directories waiting to be picked up at the parish office.  If you had your photo taken last year, please pick up your directory.  Either drop by the office during regular office hours or see a staff member after Mass.

Support Steubenville Participants Through

The Bluenose Bottle Exchange

a reminder that the Bluenose Bottle Exchange will accept bottles on behalf of the participants of Steubenville up to the end of  July.  It’s located at 99 Woodlawn Road and is open from Monday to Saturday, 8am to 5pm.   Thank you for  supporting our youth.

Parking for the Disabled

Parishioners are asked to respect the need for parking for the disabled near the east entrance to the church.  Fortunately we are able to offer parishioners a ramp to access the church at the entrance next to the tabernacle area.  There are four parking spaces assigned for use by parishioners with mobility difficulties in the laneway on the east side of the church.  On a related note, you may be aware that fundraising began last fall to replace the existing doors with an electric-operated wheelchair accessible door system.
