26th Sunday of Ordinary Time - September 30, 2012

What does it mean to be a follower of Christ? It means doing good works "in [his] name." It means receiving all others who do good "in [his] name." It means cutting off from ourselves any behaviors that keep us or others from living "in [his] name." It means, then, taking on both Jesus' single-minded focus of the kingdom of God and his open-minded acceptance of all the good works and all the good people who are bringing this kingdom about. Moses understood that God is the one who chooses those on whom the spirit will rest Both Moses and Jesus make clear that when God acts through someone, we are not to judge or thwart their efforts, but to accept and respect God's working through whomever God chooses. We tend to live in closed circles of people because of comfortableness, like-mindedness, and shared values and beliefs. Jesus challenges us to "cut. . . off" from our manner of living any attitudes or behaviors that keep us from recognizing God's presence in a broader circle.

Thanksgiving Weekend Annual Food Drive

Next weekend we will gather food items at our Sunday liturgies as well as the Thanksgiving Day morning celebration at 10am (Monday, Oct 8).  You will be invited to bring your gifts of food as part of the Procession of Gifts at all masses.  Furthermore, after the liturgy on Thanksgiving Monday morning, we will all help transfer the food to the St. Vincent de Paul store room in the school.  Your generous gifts will help the Society replenish their food shelves to serve the less fortunate more effectively.  This is a golden opportunity to involve your children with our mission to serve the poor.

PASTORAL CARE MEETING

Pastoral Care offers us the opportunity to participate in ministry as Christ asks us to do in Matthew’s Gospel, that is, one of the corporal works of mercy - to visit the sick and infirm. Visiting with those who are alone and isolated provides assurance of their importance to our community and reminds them that we walk with them in their time of suffering.

There will be a meeting for all parishioners involved in Pastoral Care this Tuesday October 2 at 7pm in the parish office. Those who feel they have a calling to this important ministry are invited and encouraged to attend.

Attention Seniors!

The Senior’s Group will gather this Monday October 1 to celebrate Mass at noon followed by a light luncheon, a sing song and other fun stuff in the area behind the tapestry.  This is the first gathering for seniors this year and we encourage you to be a part.  All seniors are welcome.

Development and Peace Emergency Appeal

Thank you for your generous response to D&P’s

emergency appeal for the needs of the people of the Sahel region of Africa!

$6,555.91 is realized!

What a testament to your concern for our brothers and sisters abroad.  All donations will be matched by the Canadian Government.  Though your generosity will make a difference in the lives of many, the situation will remain dire likely for some time to come.  Keep the people of this region and their struggle to lead whole lives in your thoughts and prayers.  Keep the workers of D&P in your prayers as well as they fulfill the compassionate mission to serve the suffering.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word at 8:45am Mass

Program continues on Sunday mornings in the room behind the tapestry.  Children are invited to that area to celebrate a child appropriate Liturgy of the Word.  This is not intended to be part of the Catechetical Program but rather an effort to draw meaning from the readings of the day and present it in a way that children will understand.  Thanks to the leaders of this program who bring the Word of God to life for our children!

Lay Liturgical Ministry Schedule

The revised minister’s schedule has been emailed.  Copies are available in the sacristy.  The schedule details assignments for Proclaimers of the Word, Ministers of Holy Communion, Servers at the Altar Table, Mass Coordinators and Children’s Liturgy of the Word Facilitators.  It covers the Sunday Masses from today, the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time, through to the 33rd Sunday followed by the Feast of Christ the King on Nov 25, the Four Sundays of Advent and the Feast of the Holy Family on Dec 30.  A comprehensive schedule indeed, not to be taken lightly.  We ask that all lay ministers stay in tune with it over these upcoming months.  All parishioners appreciate the committed service of our lay ministers!

RCIA

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process used when adults wish to be baptized into the Roman Catholic faith. Candidates participate in a period of faith formation and education culminating in Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at Easter. At the same time, we welcome those who have been Baptized in another Christian faith tradition and wish to join us in Communion, as well as those who were Baptized as Roman Catholics but were not catechized as children. Sessions will begin in the fall. Please call the office and leave your name.
