28th Sunday of Ordinary Time - October 14, 2012

The man in the gospel "ran up" to Jesus, eager to know how "to inherit eternal life." How quickly his demeanor changed when Jesus, looking on him with love for having kept the commandments, challenged him to one thing further: he must give up everything and follow Jesus "to enter the kingdom of God." Following Jesus demands that we choose not to be possessed by things, but by Jesus himself. To be possessed by Jesus we must even give up our greatest possession of all: our very selves. Then Jesus looks upon us with great love. The author of Wisdom was able to recognize that wisdom is greater than possessions. In the gospel Jesus teaches us that following him is greater than possessions. Such is the way of wisdom. Often, this passage (especially about receiving a hundredfold) is applied to those who answer the call to ordained priesthood or religious life but, in reality, this gospel passage refers to all who respond to Jesus' invitation to follow him.

Convent of St. Elisabeth in Minsk, Belarus

Art and Craft Sale Today

A Sister form Belarus (former Soviet Republic) visits our parish this weekend and make available products from their convent such as icons, crucifixes, candles, souvenirs, CDs and other religious items.  The Convent of St. Elisabeth has been serving disabled children and adult residents of the Republican Psychiatric Hospital in Minsk.  In addition, the sisters house the homeless, former prisoners, and drug and alcohol abusers on an estate near the city.  In their convent workshops they produce arts and crafts for sale to help fund their charitable activities.  Check out their website at www.obitel-minsk.by

Installation and Recognition of Ministries

Since the implementation of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (December 4, 1963), many ministries in the liturgy have been re-introduced. Some examples are: Altar servers, Lectors, (Proclaimers of the Word), Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Ministers of Hospitality, Music Ministers among others. The way in which parish members begin these ministries is a rite of commissioning or recognition. The ritual normally takes place at Sunday Eucharist when the community comes together and has this format.

After the homily the candidates are presented to the community where they make a commitment to this ministry. Then the presider asks God’s blessing on them and they are presented with a symbol of this ministry. The ministers return to their places and in the general intercessions, there is an intention for them and the parish community.

Though quite simple, the rite is important as it acknowledges that these parish members have this specific ministry and the community is called to pray for them.

Over the next Sundays, we will celebrate these rites at some Sunday masses, both welcoming people to the different ministries and asking God’s blessing on those already involved.

Thanksgiving Weekend Annual Food Drive

Thank you for contributing so generously to the food stocks of St. Vincent de Paul Society last weekend.  Many parishioners helped carry the food from the church to the school where it is stored.  Thank you for your compassionate support.  Your generous gifts has helped the Society replenish their food shelves to serve the less fortunate more effectively.

About Parish Properties

A Brief Update: The building on the hill above the church has now been vacated by the former renters and our plan is to do some renovations so that it can serve as our principal parish meeting centre. The project will take considerable time and financial input. We wish to do a make-over of the kitchen facility and also have the main floor accessible to all. In time, the Knights of Columbus chambers and the Saint Vincent de Paul Food storage will be located there as well. Meanwhile, in cooperation with Churchill Academy, which has entered into a new lease agreement with the parish, we will use the school building for some of our activities. More news soon.

HEARTS ON FIRE
Praying with Jesuits

A study of Hearts on Fire, a compilation that expresses the wide range of prayerful concerns of Jesuits faithful to scriptural prayer and the Spiritual Exercises of their founder Ignatius Loyola. Like the disciples of Emmaus, their hearts were on fire. This study will introduce the broad perspectives of Ignatian spirituality as well as the movement through the phases of the Spiritual Exercises.  Four Thursday sessions 7-9 pm: Oct 11, 25, Nov 8, 22. Earl Smith, S.J. and Barbara McVeigh. Suggested offering $25 per session.

JESUS' GROWTH IN THE SPIRIT
Three key moments: incarnation, baptism, resurrection

The Jesus we follow grew as a human being in wisdom, grace, and age before God and before other humans (Lk 2:52). Grace is the gift of the Spirit. Thus the Spirit possessed him more and more completely as he went through his earthly journey towards the resurrection. And this is quite evident from his earthly ministry. What are the moments of our growth in the Spirit, and how do they relate us to Jesus Christ?  Four Tuesday sessions, 7-9 pm: Oct 9, 16, 30 Nov 13 J-M Laporte. Suggested offering $25 per session.

The Jesuits would be delighted to be of assistance

in your journey of faith.

SUPPORT TO HOLLY HOUSE, DARTMOUTH

As you are probably already aware, the Elizabeth Fry Society is an organization dedicated to serve women from all walks of life, not only those in prisons. It provides a safe, healing environment for strength and re-growth. It defends the rights of women, provides a safe, healing environment while working to ensure fair treatment in the criminal justice system. Above all, the society views women not as objects to be dismissed, but as human beings who can make a positive contribution to our society.  One of Elizabeth Fry’s projects is Holly House which is located on Tulip Street in Dartmouth and has been in existence since 2007.  The house provides affordable housing for 11 women as well as offering outreach support and advocacy services to all women in the Dartmouth area.  Holly House provides support to women by visiting them at the Halifax Correctional Centre in Burnside and provides them with personal care items.

The Catholic Women’s League will be collecting items so that Holly House can continue the work of helping these women at the Correctional Centre.  The following is a list of needed items.  Please ensure that there are no metal parts on the containers (plastic only) and no toothbrushes (for safety reasons):

  • Deodorant

  • Toothpaste

  • Hand Lotion

  • Body Lotion

  • Shampoo

  • Body Wash

  • Hair Conditioner

  • Soap

  • Elastic Hair Bands (no metal on them)

  • Chapstick

  • Lip Balm (has to be clear or translucent type)

A basket has been placed in the Blessed Mother’s niche in the church and will remain there until November 19.  The assistance you provide is greatly appreciated

‘need to involve more people in ministries’

‘need to redevelop our Ministry of Welcome ie greeters’
