29th Sunday of Ordinary Time - October 21, 2012

When James and John brazenly demand of Jesus, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you," they reverse the usual dynamics of the disciple/teacher relationship. By acquiescing with "What do you wish me to do for you?" Jesus accepts the role reversal they foist on him. By responding in this way, Jesus reveals another reversal: glory is given not to those who seek to be "first among" others but to those who choose to serve others by giving their lives for them. Out of which reversal do we live? The verses from the fourth Song of the Suffering Servant (also read on Good Friday) foreshadow the fullness of the servant-hood accepted by Jesus on our behalf: he gave his life for us. Because of this self-gift, God glorified him: "Out of his anguish, he shall see light." The tendency toward self-promotion is part of our human nature. Jesus teaches us by his own life and ministry that discipleship, however, is not about seeking places of honor but about serving others. And serving others is the only path to real glory.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SADIE!

Sadie Graham to Celebrate 100 Year Birthday

You are invited to the Parish Hall (school gym) to wish Sadie

a Happy Birthday on

Pastoral Care

There are people in our parish who are unable to join us due to sickness or mobility issues or because they are providing continuing care for a loved one. Reaching out to these parishioners may be as simple as bringing them a bulletin. Please take a moment to consider whether you might know of someone in this situation.
Those at home who would like to receive Holy Communion or a parish visit are asked to leave contact information at the parish office (466-6183) and a member of the Pastoral Care team will get in touch with them.

 Prayer Line

During her time with us, Sister Cecelia initiated the Prayer Line Network here in the parish. Though the Network has not been maintained recently, Josephine O’Sullivan has offered to be its administrator.  If you have a friend or family member who is seriously ill or dying, contact the office (466-6183) and leave their name.  Parishioners are ready and willing to take their needs to prayer.

November 11 Remembrance Day is a Sunday

About Parish Properties

A Brief Update: The building on the hill above the church has now been vacated by the former renters and our plan is to do some renovations so that it can serve as our principal parish meeting centre. The project will take considerable time and financial input. We wish to do a make-over of the kitchen facility and also have the main floor accessible to all. In time, the Knights of Columbus chambers and the Saint Vincent de Paul Food storage will be located there as well. Meanwhile, in cooperation with Churchill Academy, which has entered into a new lease agreement with the parish, we will use the school building for some of our activities. More news soon.

All Souls’ Day Mass Friday November 2

November is traditionally the month when we remember all the faithful departed.  On November 1 we celebrate All Saints.  That being a Thursday, we will celebrate Mass at the usual noon hour.  Whereas All Souls’ falls on a Friday, we will celebrate that morning at 9am.

It has been our tradition here at St. Peter Parish to gather on another date in November to commemorate all the faithful departed, but especially those who have departed in the past year.  These we remember in a special way.  This season we will celebrate that

Mass on Wednesday November 7 at 7pm.

Families that have lost a loved one in the past year will be invited to light a candle in their memory.

SUPPORT HOLLY HOUSE

The Elizabeth Fry Society is dedicated to serve women from all walks of life. It provides a safe, healing environment for re-growth. It defends the rights of women while ensuring fair treatment in the criminal justice system. One of the Society’s projects is Holly House located on Tulip St. since 2007.  The house provides affordable housing for 11 women and offers outreach support and advocacy services to all women in the Dartmouth area.  Holly House visits women at the Halifax Correctional Centre and provides them with personal care items.

The Catholic Women’s League is collecting items for this cause: (for safety reasons please no metal parts on the containers and no toothbrushes) Deodorant, toothpaste, hand lotion, body lotion, shampoo, body wash, hair conditioner, soap, elastic hair bands (no metal), lip balm (clear translucent type).  A basket has been placed in the Blessed Mother’s niche until Nov 19.  Thank you for supporting!

Sacrament of Baptism

Last Sunday, October 14, Addison Harper Crawford, daughter of Robyn and Colin; and Jose Enrico Zulueta, son of Elvira and Joseph were Baptized here in our church.  Keep them and their families in your prayers that they will always walk as children of the Light.
