27th Sunday of Ordinary Time - October 7, 2012
Jesus is indignant with the disciples for the same reason he confronts the Pharisees for their "hardness of ... hearts," Jesus contrasts the "hardness of ... hearts" that led to the Mosaic Law permitting divorce with the openness of heart he modeled when he embraced and blessed the children. In the midst of real struggles and difficulties marking human relationships, we are to maintain the openness of heart—like Jesus and innocent children—that was God's intention "from the beginning of creation." In such openness of heart the kingdom of God is among us. This familiar story from Genesis reveals that "from the beginning of creation" God intended that we humans live in community and be in life-giving relationships with each other and all of creation. Hardness of heart can be easier than openness of heart because the former focuses us on ourselves. In the end, however, such hardness of heart destroys self and relationships. The only way to real fulfillment of self is through openness to others.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Though we are ever thankful to God for the great gifts of Creation, at this time of year we join with many others in our society to praise God for bestowing such gifts and blessing our country with plentiful resources. As Christians, we always pray that we will be good stewards of these resources and that we will find ways to share with those who are less fortunate.
We offer this prayer for use in your home before your Thanksgiving dinner. Perhaps a young family member could lead.
PRAYER LEADER
Blessed are you, Lord our God, Creator of heaven and earth
and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We praise you for your glory
and thank you for your goodness to us.
We praise you for your generous gifts
and for bringing fruitful results for our labours.
As we rejoice in your kindness,
we pray also for those who are in need.
Open our hearts to them,
and teach us to be as generous to others as you are to us.
Gracious and bounteous God,
help us all to follow Jesus our Lord
and so bear eternal fruit for you.
Blessed are you, Lord our God, for ever and ever.
ALL
Amen.
Thanksgiving Weekend Annual Food Drive
This weekend we gather food items at our Sunday liturgies as well as the …
Thanksgiving Day morning celebration of Mass at 10am. You will be invited to bring your gifts of food as part of the Procession of Gifts at all masses. Furthermore, after the liturgy on Monday morning, we will all help transfer the food to the St. Vincent de Paul store room in the school. Your generous gifts will help the Society replenish their food shelves to serve the less fortunate more effectively. Consider embracing this opportunity to involve your children with our mission to serve the poor.
