33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time - November 18, 2012
"From the fig tree learn its lesson." What are we to learn? That the annual greening of the fig tree is a harbinger of new life arising out of seeming deadness. That the annual gospel prediction of apocalyptic destruction is a harbinger that Jesus "is near." Indeed Jesus' promise that he will be near at the end of times is a promise already being fulfilled now. Life arising from deadness has already happened to Jesus. It is already happening in us. Like the gospel, the 1st reading apocalyptically describes calamity and distress. But its stronger point is the promise that those "who lead the many to righteousness" will "live forever." The 1st reading provides the ethical injunction —a way to live—that assures new life will arise from seeming deadness. Popular religious culture is fascinated by the end times with “their cataclysms and their unsurpassed distress." But what the end times more truly reveal is Christ's victory and our share in his glory.
The St. Vincent de Paul Annual Book Sale
This Saturday and Sunday
Saturday: 5 to 6pm / Sunday: 10am to 1pm
The St. Vincent de Paul Society is holding their annual book sale this weekend in the gym. A great chance for you to stock up on your winter reading material. We really could use your help on Sunday at 1pm to pack and recycle the material. It’s not really heavy work and as always, many hands make light work. Thanks.
Advent Backpack Project
This year our parish will partner with four other Dartmouth parishes to fill bags of gifts for the patrons of Feeding Others of Dartmouth and other local charities. Our goal is to fill 300 gift bags with useful items for adult men and women who do not have the resources to provide for themselves.
At the entrances to the church, you will find gift bags with a list of suggested items inside. Please take a gift bag home with you, fill it, and deliver it back to the church on or before Thursday, December 13.
We hope for your generous support of this Advent project.
Next Sunday We Celebrate Christ the King
The Solemnity of Christ the King is the Thirty-fourth or last Sunday in Ordinary Time. The following Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent. As we enter that new Liturgical Year we will change to the C Cycle of readings as we are currently nearing the end of the B Cycle.
The Book of Remembrance
The Book of Remembrance continues to occupy a special place in the sanctuary. You are invited to add the names of family members and friends who have gone before us. During the month of November we pray for them at all Masses.
+ a reminder: Saturday Mass has changed to 4pm +
for the duration of the winter months.

Development and Peace
This fall, D&P’s education theme is DO IT JUSTICE. They ask their supporters to reflect on how Canadians contribute to international solidarity and the fight against poverty. Since its founding, D&P has supported more than 16,000 local initiatives in 70 countries in diverse fields such as agriculture, education, community action, peace building and human rights. The needs, perspectives and knowledge of the poor must be included in aid and development projects. There are information papers at the main entrance of the church. Please take one home. Consider becoming a member of D&P. A one year membership is $5. It’s a straightforward way to be in solidarity with D&P. Find forms at the main entrance.

Advent Liturgical Environment: Helpers Needed
Consider helping us on Saturday, December 1 as we make our annual preparations for the season of Advent. That day beginning at 9am we will install the Advent Wreath and Candles as well as the Nativity setting. If you are able to help it would be appreciated.
Advent Wreath for the Home
As we approach the season of Advent, we suggest that your family ‘dig out’ your Advent wreath for your home and ‘spruce it up’ in preparation for lighting daily in your home during Advent/Christmas.
Installation of Officers of Knights of Columbus
Last Saturday, the Knights of Columbus Council 3133 were formally installed for the current fraternal year in a ceremony following the 4pm Mass. The Knights welcome Catholic males over the age of 18 to support their mission. Check out their website at www.kofc.org.
Feed Others Of Dartmouth Special Request
There is an urgent need for new or used men’s and women’s winter gloves and socks. The need exists as the days grow longer and colder and our friends in the downtown area struggle to stay warm.
Prayer Cards for the Season of Advent
On the First Sunday of Advent (Dec 2) we will distribute sets of prayer cards (provided by CHALICE) to families. The goal is to provide prayer opportunities to reach those who are suffering, in need or who have been separated from our faith community.
How does it work? Privately we will light a candle, say the prayer in the card, and send the card to the person for whom we pray. Actually, there’s a little more to it than that. Watch for more info next week.
HOLLY HOUSE with CWL
A sincere thank you from the CBW on behalf of the residents of Holly House. Your generosity in responding to the need of women who struggle to find justice is a testament to your faith in the mission we maintain to serve those in need.
