Holy Family - December 30, 2012
A BLESSING FOR THE NEW YEAR
God of time and eternity, with Christmas joy we praise you for the year gone by and for the year we have begun. Your Son comes among us to bring glad tidings to the poor and to proclaim a year acceptable in your sight. Knit us in harmony and love, we who are flesh of his flesh. Fill this new year with mercy and compassion, with prosperity and accord, as we join with the angels in proclaiming your praise: Glory in heaven and earth, now and forever. Amen
Feast of the Holy Family
Sunday, December 30, 2012
Mary and Joseph looked for Jesus. In reality, this describes our own Christian living. We look for Jesus when we, like him, seek to be in God’s presence; when we, like him, choose to be obedient; when we, like him, grow in wisdom. Along the way we discover that Jesus enlarges where we look for him, how we find him, and what new understanding comes to us through our encounters with him. This is the pattern of faithful Christian living that brings us to fullness of life.
The 2nd reading parallels what the Gospel suggests about looking for Jesus. We look for Jesus by believing in him, loving one another, and keeping the commandments. Our experience of divine presence, obedience, and growing in wisdom unfolds first and foremost in our family life. The joys, challenges, and pains of family life are all opportunities to look for and find Jesus.

Rediscover Catholicism
Many of you accepted the gift of a copy of the book ‘Rediscover Catholicism’ on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Two hundred were circulated among the people of the parish. We will order more in the near future. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to share the book after you’ve read it with a friend or family member.
At a time when many Catholics are disillusioned, questioning their faith, and filled with doubts about the relevance of Catholicism in the modern world, the voice of one man cries out in this book to the world’s largest faith community with a clarity that is rare and inspiring.
Sacrament of Baptism
The Baptism of Lauren Elizabeth Latham, daughter of
Lesley O’Brien-Latham & Derek Latham takes place this Sunday. Please keep this child and her family in your prayers that they will always walk as children of the Light.
Notes for Liturgical Ministers
Lay Ministers: The new (January-March) schedule has been emailed to lay ministers. Some paper copies are available in the sacristy.
Altar Servers: A handbook has been developed for altar servers. Copies are available in the sacristy for current serving members of this ministry. Please study your copy to update your knowledge of our serving protocols.
Mental Health Program Christmas Gifts
Thank You! to everyone who contributed Christmas gifts. The inpatients and residents of the NS Hospital, Abbie J. Lane Building and East Coast Forensic Hospital are very appreciative.
CHRISTMAS SPONSORS
On behalf of all parishioners, we extend great appreciation to all the individuals, groups or businesses who sponsored a family or single person this Christmas.
Ministry of Welcome and Hospitality
The Liturgy Committee has made it a priority to rekindle our Ministry of Welcome. For several years now the ministry has been inactive at most liturgies, though a couple of committed parishioners have continued the task of greeting the faithful. The goal is to have a committed ministry at the entrance(s) to welcome God’s people as they assemble for prayer. If you feel suited for this ministry, contact Greg at the office. You will be asked to commit to arriving early at Mass on a regular basis. As well you will be required to have a general knowledge about parish groups and programs. Members of this ministry will generate a warm welcome to both parishioners and visitors.
Big commitment. Great affect in the parish.
Development and Peace
Your Donations at Work: the good news
D&P raised a total of $7 million dollars for aid in the fight against the famine in the Horn of Africa. Our parish alone raised over $6000 dollars. Working with the local Caritas organizations this is bringing relief to thousands of people in Mali, Niger, Burkino Faso, Chad, Senegal and Mauritania. In Mali, Caritas Mali, our partner in the area, cereals and grains are being given to over 25,000 hungry people. Also 100 reserve granaries, a community initiative that allows farmers to protect themselves against price speculation, are being supported. In Niger, Caritas Niger is organizing cash-for-work, and food-for-work programs in 69 vulnerable villages. In Burkino Faso, cereals are being distributed to more than 2000 families. Farmers are receiving help to improve food production and to replenish and feed livestock.
Catholic Women’s League Cookbook
Please pass along recipes to the office before Jan 31. The proceeds will be donated to Bryony House.
CHOIRS
New singers and instrumentalists are always welcome. Choir members for the Sunday 11:15am and 7pm masses rehearse on Wednesday evenings at 7:30. The Saturday choir group rehearses before the 4pm mass at 3. Children’s choir rehearses on Wednesday afternoon from 4-5pm in preparation for our 8:45am liturgy. Choir rehearsals will resume in the new year. Contact the office for information.
Saint Peter Drama Group
Annually our Drama Group has staged musicals here in the church. Past shows have included ‘ Godspell’, ‘HAIR’ and ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, not to mention ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ and others that were developed by our own group. Many will remember the enjoyable ‘Who’s that girl!: the story of Esther’ which played to large crowds of parishioners and their friends in 2011. Last year the group reprised ‘Godspell’ If you feel inclined toward good quality amateur theatre, get involved. We are an all ages cast, band and support team. Singers, dancers, the whole bit. Contact Greg at the office if you’d like to be part of our spring production of
