Epiphany of the Lord - January 6, 2013
Arriving in Jerusalem, the wise men (magi) ask a critical question: “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews?”This is the burning question that prompted them to follow a distant star to a distant place. What planted this burning question in their hearts surely was some wisdom that their lives were not complete. Their journey to find the Infant was long and convoluted, yet guided by heavenly light. We, too, will find Christ if we search. We, too, will be led by God’s light. We, too, will be satisfied with Fullness of life. For Isaiah the “light [which] has come” to Jerusalem is God’s glory. The story of the magi in the Gospel reveals that the light is Christ himself, manifested to all nations. We tend to rely on logic when setting a direction for our lives, for example, when choosing a spouse, a profession, a neighborhood, or a school. From the magi we learn that life-directing choices must also be guided by unexpected in-breakings of wisdom that come from sudden light, the counsel of others, inspiration, insight, dreams.
Feed Others Of Dartmouth
Next weekend (January 12 & 13) is our monthly committed weekend to provide meals for Feeding Others Of Dartmouth. Sign up sheets are posted at the main entrance where someone from Parish Outreach will guide you in the best ways to serve. The help you provide is instrumental in ensuring that this worthy outreach project continues.
St. Vincent de Paul Outreach
A ‘Thank You’ to our helpers from the SVdeP Society:
At this year’s Christmas Dinner, 325 guests were served and 310 take outs provided. A list of sponsors who contributed is posted at the entrances to the Church. While we would like to extend individual thanks to all who contributed to this year’s success, it is not possible. Please accept this as our Thank You. Many of our guests expressed their gratitude for the meal and hospitality. Also Thank You to the many who contribute regularly to help maintain our food stocks as we continue to serve those who need food assistance.
The Funeral Mass for Michael Newton will be celebrated on Tuesday morning at 10am.
(Note that Mass will not be celebrated at noon that day)

Christmas Flowers
Your gifts of flowers to adorn our worship environment, often in memory of a loved one, have been the proverbial ‘icing on the cake’ for the Christmas season. Thank You!
CHRISTMAS SPONSORS
On behalf of all parishioners, we extend great appreciation to all the individuals, groups or businesses that sponsored a family or single person this Christmas.
Rediscover Catholicism
Many of you accepted the gift of a copy of the book ‘Rediscover Catholicism’ on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Two hundred were circulated among the people of the parish. We will order more in the near future. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to share the book after you’ve read it with a friend or family member.
At a time when many Catholics are disillusioned, questioning their faith, and filled with doubts about the relevance of Catholicism in the modern world, the voice of this author cries out to the world’s largest faith community with a clarity that is rare and inspiring.
Epiphany Plus …
the concert: Every Nation On Earth
Parishioners enjoyed the concert on Friday evening. We thank members of our Music Ministry for their hard work in supporting our liturgies during all the seasons of the liturgical year.
Notes for Liturgical Ministers
Lay Ministers: The January-March schedule has been emailed to lay ministers. Some paper copies are available in the sacristy.
Altar Servers: A handbook has been developed for altar servers. Copies are available in the sacristy for current serving members of this ministry. Please study your copy to update your knowledge of our serving protocols.
Mental Health Program Christmas Gifts
Thank You! to everyone who contributed Christmas gifts. The inpatients and residents of the NS Hospital, Abbie J. Lane Building and East Coast Forensic Hospital are very appreciative.
Ministry of Welcome and Hospitality
The Liturgy Committee intends to rekindle our Ministry of Welcome. For several years now the ministry has been inactive at most liturgies, though a couple of committed parishioners have continued the task of greeting the faithful. If you feel you have gifts to offer in this regard, talk to a member of the Pastoral Team after Mass or call the office during regular office hours.
With Great Appreciation
Our thanks to all who contributed to make our liturgies so wonderful over the Advent and Christmas season. Much work by many parishioners enables this success. From the folks who applied their artfulness in the installation of the Advent wreath and candles, Jesse Tree and Nativity setting, to those who proclaimed the Word of God with conviction. Thanks to the planners of liturgies and the Coordinator of Liturgical Ministers. Thanks to the Mass Coordinators and all liturgical ministers, including the Altar Servers, Ministers of Holy Communion and those who welcomed the faithful at the Christmas liturgies. Thanks to our Music Ministry for uplifting our praise and encouraging us to engage fully. All of this in the context of such inspired outreach to those in our neighbourhood who are less fortunate. Thanks to those committed to helping out in the office, especially at this time of year when the need is greater. We are truly blessed as a Christian community working to share the Good News!
Development and Peace
Your Donations at Work: the good news
D&P raised a total of $7 million dollars for aid in the fight against the famine in the Horn of Africa. Our parish alone raised over $6000 dollars. Working with the local Caritas organizations this is bringing relief to thousands of people in Mali, Niger, Burkino Faso, Chad, Senegal and Mauritania. In Mali, Caritas Mali, our partner in the area, cereals and grains are being given to over 25,000 hungry people. Also 100 reserve granaries, a community initiative that allows farmers to protect themselves against price speculation, are being supported. In Niger, Caritas Niger is organizing cash-for-work, and food-for-work programs in 69 vulnerable villages. In Burkino Faso, cereals are being distributed to more than 2000 families. Farmers are receiving help to improve food production and to replenish and feed livestock.
