Baptism of the Lord - January 6, 2013

Because of the power of John's baptism, the people's expectation is that they have found the Christ in John. John points the people, however, to Jesus, who will bring an even more powerful baptism. The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus, so does the Holy Spirit descend upon us; Jesus is the beloved Son, so are we beloved children; God was well pleased with Jesus, so is God well pleased with us. To what does such a baptism call us? What do we expect? What does God expect? The 2nd reading spells out what baptismal living looks like: "renounce impiety and worldly passion, ... to live lives that are self-controlled, upright and godly." This is the rebirth to which God calls us. Over time and experience we grow to maturity as human beings, appreciating more and more fully both our roots and our potential. So, too, with baptism. We grow over time into understanding its meaning and its power.

Rediscover Catholicism

Many of you accepted the gift of a copy of the book ‘Rediscover Catholicism’ on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  Two hundred were circulated among the people of the parish.  We will order more in the near future.  In the meantime, don’t hesitate to share the book after you’ve read it with a friend or family member.  Or share your thought about what you’ve read with a friend or colleague.  Perhaps you’d like to share your thoughts on an email to the parish office.

At a time when many Catholics are questioning their faith and filled with doubts about the relevance of Catholicism in the modern world, the voice of the author Matthew Kelly cries out to the world’s largest faith community with a clarity that is rare and inspiring.

This weekend is our monthly committed weekend to provide meals for Feeding Others Of Dartmouth.  Thank you for the help you’ve provided in donating, preparing and serving food.  Your outreach is very key in helping raise the spirits and well being of our neighbours in downtown Dartmouth.

Catechetical Program

EDGE Program (Grades 7 & 8) and Confirmation Class continue next Saturday at 10am.

Epiphany Plus …the Christmas concert:

Every Nation On Earth   on Youtube

If you have a few minutes, go on Youtube and enter Epiphany Plus St Peter and find a clip from the concert on January 4. It’s hilarious.  You might see someone you know, maybe even yourself.  Kidding aside though, it is a remarkable scene of parishioners coming together to express their love for God and each other.  Enjoy.  We thank members of our Music Ministry for their hard work in supporting our liturgies during all the seasons of the liturgical year.

to see what’s up.  We’re looking for parishioners to be in the cast or chorus, set stages, make costumes, take part in the band and more.  Lots of work.  Lots of fun.

The Drama Group has been staging musicals for a decade, this being their tenth year.  Anyone who wants to be involved will be accepted.  You need not have previous stage experience to be in the cast or chorus.  Basic music or singing skills help for sure.  We are also looking for folks to help with the backstage end.

Rehearsals will generally happen on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings.  The band will rehearse on Saturday afternoons.

Talk to Greg at the keyboards after Mass or contact him at the office.

Notes for Liturgical Ministers

Lay Ministers: The January-March schedule has been emailed to lay ministers. Some paper copies are available in the sacristy.

Altar Servers: A handbook has been developed for altar servers. Copies are available in the sacristy for current serving members of this ministry. Please study your copy to update your knowledge of our serving protocols.

Sacrament of Baptism

Evan Marcantonio MacDonald, son of Andrea Marcantonio and Clarke MacDonald; and Lance Delacruz Amores, son of Amelita Delacruz and Lloyd Amores are to be Baptized into the Church this Sunday.  Please keep them and all members of their families in your thoughts and prayers that they will ever walk as children of the Light.

Senior’s Group

The Senior’s group will meet next on Tuesday February 5 to celebrate Mass at noon and share a light lunch and social time.  Mark it on your calendar.

Liturgy of the Word for Children

at 8:45am Mass

The program resumes this Sunday.  All appreciate the fine efforts of the team that breaks open the Word of God for our youngest members in a way that helps them listen and understand.

Ministry of  Hospitality

The Liturgy Committee intends to rekindle our Ministry of Hospitality.  For several years now the ministry has been inactive at most liturgies, though a couple of committed parishioners have continued the task of greeting the faithful. If you feel you have gifts to offer in this regard, talk to a member of the Pastoral Team after Mass or call the office during regular office hours.
