Third Sunday of Ordinary Time - January 27, 2013

Luke reveals that after pondering the Good News of Jesus Christ, he too has decided to join the eyewitnesses and ministers and hand on the story of the Lord in his own way, by compiling a narrative of the events in an orderly sequence, and sharing them with his friend Theophilus.  Theophilus, whose name means “God’s beloved,” is also a term that describes each of us.  Luke’s narrative is thus intended for a much wider audience than this one person.  It shares the Good News of Jesus Christ with us, but it also inspires each of us to follow Luke’s example in sharing the story of Jesus Christ in unique and personal ways.  We may not write another Gospel, but we can share the Good News with those around us through our service, our relationships, our choices and convictions. coming this LENT…

the FORUM at Saint Peter

for  Parish Renewal

      FORUM 1 Saturday March 2

The Year of Faith, The New Evangelization, Parish Renewal, etc.  We have been hearing these “buzz words” for some time now.  The question is, ‘What are we called to do to make them a reality?’  We believe that we are called at this time to bring about a genuine renewal within our parish and beyond, and we have a plan.

On Saturday, March 2, we will gather as a parish for the first of two FORUMS.  The objective of the first FORUM is essentially to re-discover who we are as a parish.  There are many good things happening in and around our community, and we possess many strengths, but it cannot be denied that we are living Christian life during challenging times for our parish. For many of the faithful, these challenges have been the source of sadness, confusion, even disbelief.

We have invited Dr. David Deane, author and professor at the Atlantic School of Theology, to walk this portion of our road toward renewal with us.  Dr. Deane will speak directly to the challenges we face in parish life in this post structural age.  He shares our concerns and sees parish communities as the primary site of transformation.

When we gather that day, it will be important to ensure that there are opportunities for discussion and idea sharing.  Again, that day the primary goal will be to look inward as parish, and rediscover who we are.

The second FORUM will unfold during the Easter season (date to be announced).  At that time we will build on the strength of the first FORUM and explore concrete ways for renewal, rejuvenation and re-growth.  There is always more to do as we strive to be faithful to the Gospel mandate of building God’s kingdom in our local area.

We ask you now to mark your calendar and plan to be part of this important development at a sensitive time in the evolution of our parish!

Liturgical Ministry and Recruitment

As we mentioned last Sunday, a member of the Liturgy Committee and two youth who are involved in Liturgical Ministry visited children of the Catechetical Program during classes to invite them to become involved in Altar Serving and Children’s Choir.  This may be a good time for you to have a conversation with your child about the importance of ministry in the context of our liturgical celebrations and the positive influence ministry has on children as their faith develops in tandem with their sense of belonging to the community.  The children were given contact information.  Please don’t hesitate to contact the parish office or a member of staff if you have questions.

Liturgical Music

For more than a year now, since we adopted the Revised Roman Missal, we have been singing a Gloria, Holy Holy, Memorial Acclamation, Great Amen and Lamb of God that are found in the Celebrate in Song (red book) hymnal.  We encourage you to follow along with the choir.  The settings are found at 2.2 through 2.6.  These are your parts to sing.  We invite you to sing them to their full potential.
