Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time - February 10, 2013

In today’s Gospel story Peter begins by allowing Jesus to take command of his boat.  He moves to allowing Jesus to take command of his heart, openly confessing the truth about himself ("I am a sinful man").  Finally, he allows Jesus to take command of his whole life ("left everything and followed him").  Like Peter, we are to allow Jesus to take command of us—our possessions, our hearts, our lives. Both Isaiah and Peter declare themselves to be sinful people.  But the call of God comes to sinful people and in diverse places (Temple, boats).  The call depends not on the individual or the place, but on the graciousness of God.  Too often we feel that the burden of discipleship rests solely on our own shoulders.  The Gospel depicts Jesus initiating the call—he comes to Peter at his boat; he invites Peter to follow.  Our discipleship rests upon Jesus long before we begin to follow. at noon and 5pm here at St. Peter Church

and at 7pm at Immaculate Conception Church.

The Meaning of Lent

On Ash Wednesday, from dawn until evening, women and men on their way to or from work, parents with toddlers, school children and teens will gather in the church to be marked with a cross of ashes on their foreheads.  It is as if even before they have listened to the First Reading, they have heard the prophet Joel’s cry to call an assembly and gather the congregation.  Many have suggested why this day is so important to Catholics, but what is incontrovertible is that the rituals and prayers of Ash Wednesday call people to remember that being a Christian is serious business.

The exhortation, ‘Repent, and believe in the Gospel,’ strikes at the heart of the meaning of Lent.  The older more traditional formula, ‘Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return’ is a helpful reminder that our lives on earth are bounded in time and that we are responsible for how we use this gift of our life.

During Advent and Christmas time, we focused on the light of God as revealed in Jesus.  Lent is a liturgical time of preparation for the manifestation of God’s love in Jesus’ self giving of his life, and his Resurrection, which we will celebrate during the Three Days.  It has been said, ‘Easter, with its grace of interior resurrection, is the radical healing of the human condition.  Lent, which prepares us for this grace, is about what needs to be healed’.

Through our Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, we recognize our need for healing as individuals and collectively as a society.

Development and Peace

The theme for this year’s SHARE LENT campaign is

HUMAN DIGNITY, more than ever. Archbishop Smith, president of the Canadian Council of Bishops, tells us that, “To believe in human dignity is to be convinced that poverty is a call to journey together with the poor in search of the Kingdom of God, where justice and peace reign.  Development and Peace is the visible expression of our love as Canadian Catholics for the human family and of our hope that the world can be a better place for all.”  Today we have attached a Solidarity Calendar to the bulletin. It offers a good way to reflect on the meaning of human dignity each day during Lent. It is an excellent way to teach all, especially our children, about how much we take for granted in our lives.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society seeks your help and asks you to consider becoming involved with their OUTREACH work …

The St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Peter Church serves the residents of downtown Dartmouth and Woodside. There are many in our community who occasionally need our help in their daily grind to make ends meet. Our Parish actively helps ease, just a little, by providing and delivering groceries when requested. We do not and cannot provide a lot but what little is brought is given with a smile, an encouraging word and an open ear.  It is given on behalf of the parish as an open and non-judgmental Christian act.

From Monday to Friday on a regular basis, we have ten 2-member teams responding to calls coming into the parish office. On occasion, finances permitting, we provide, on a case-by-case basis, assistance with rent, heat, water, power, prescriptions and transportation.

Our objective remains to continue to provide food, so that no one goes hungry, as well as some financial assistance and time to those most in need.

To continue this work, we need your help in the following ways:  your contribution of food to our food stocking room, your donations to the collection on Ash Wednesday and at other times of the year, your membership on our outreach team.

(We are presently short two members)

If you wish to learn more please leave your name with Sherri at the parish office or call John MacKinnon (463-3284). Further information will be provided by one of our members.  If you are interested, training will be given by working with an existing team.

Think of it.  You, as a member of one of the teams of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, would be out in the parish distributing much needed food to your neighbours in our city.  The outreach is ongoing and carries a large responsibility.  The Society asks you to consider being part of this essential outreach effort.

Members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society express their appreciation for the widespread support offered by parishioners!

Gender Selective Abortion Petition

Recent studies have shown that the practice of aborting female babies in favour of males is happening in Canada.  Member of Parliament Mark Warawa has introduced a motion to the house condemning discrimination against females occurring through gender-selective abortions. This motion will be introduced to the house for 1st reading in early March.  Please take the time to sign the petition at the back of the church in support of this motion, which conveys to Parliament that we condemn the discrimination against females through gender-selective abortion.
