First Sunday of Lent - February 17, 2013
In the Gospel, twice the devil entices Jesus to give into temptation by saying, "If you are the Son of God . . ." True, Jesus is divine, but he is also fully human. Jesus resists the devil's temptation to put aside his humanity and act like God, thus remaining true to himself and to why he came. But Jesus' resisting the temptations has implications for us, too. By fully embracing his humanity Jesus lifts us up to be who we are in our relationship with God. Only from this relationship do we have the inner strength and conviction to make right choices in face of the temptations that are an inevitable part of being human. The devil sets himself up as Lord when he tempts Jesus to worship him. Paul reminds us in the 2nd reading that the One whom we are to profess as Lord is Jesus. All temptation presents us with a choice in the face of a perceived good. We are able to see through the ruse of the perceived good to the inherent selfishness of all temptation when we spend our lives deepening our sense of who we are in relation to God. the FORUM at Saint Peter
for Parish Renewal
FORUM 1 …Saturday March 2
to bring about a genuine renewal
within our parish and beyond
with Dr. David Deane author and professor
Atlantic School of Theology
Mark your calendar and plan to be part of this important development at a sensitive time in the evolution of our parish!
On Saturday, March 2, we will gather at 9:30am in the church for the first of two FORUMS. The FORUM that morning will conclude no later than 12:30pm. The objective of the first FORUM is essentially to re-discover who we are as parish. There are many good things happening in and around our community, and we possess many strengths, but it cannot be denied that we are living Christian life during challenging times for our parish. For many of the faithful, these challenges have been the source of sadness, confusion, even disbelief.
We have invited Dr. David Deane, author and professor at the Atlantic School of Theology, to walk this portion of our road toward renewal with us. Dr. Deane will speak directly to the challenges we face in parish life. He shares our concerns and sees parish communities as the primary site of transformation in the Church.
When we gather that day, there will be ample opportunities for discussion and idea sharing. Again, that day the primary goal will be to look inward as parish, and rediscover who we are while accounting for our strengths.
The second FORUM will unfold during the Easter season. At that time we will build on the strength of the first FORUM and explore concrete ways for renewal, rejuvenation and re-growth. There is always more to do as we strive to be faithful to the Gospel mandate of building God’s kingdom in our local area.
Please plan to take part in this important event. We need you at the FORUM. You are important to this parish. Planning processes work best when there are many active participants. Mark your calendar and plan to be part of this important development at a sensitive time in the evolution of our parish!
Development and Peace
Share Lent Campaign
Human Dignity, more than ever
This week you found a card attached to this bulletin telling how Human Dignity is the right to live on your own land.
Our D&P partner in Cambodia is helping the Phnong indigenous community to obtain legal identity certificates so they can prove ownership of their land, and thus have a say in how that land is developed. With these certificates they will be able to legally transfer the land to their children, thus benefitting another generation.
Next Sunday, February 24, will be the first Share Lent collection. Envelopes are included in the regular Sunday collection packages. As well, there will be envelopes at the doorways of the church.
Please pick up the mini-magazine which gives further information on the great work being done by D&P thanks to your support. Your generosity is a sign of your solidarity with and compassion for the poor in the Global South.
Gender Selective Abortion Petition
Recent studies have shown that the practice of aborting female babies in favour of males is happening in Canada. Member of Parliament Mark Warawa has introduced a motion to the house condemning discrimination against females occurring through gender-selective abortions. This motion will be introduced to the house for 1st reading in early March. Please take the time to sign the petition at the main entrance to the church in support of this motion, which conveys to Parliament that we condemn the discrimination against females through gender-selective abortion.
