IIc+DrvStop.shk (by Jay Edwards and Tony Cianfaglione) - 2004 ------------------------------------------------------------- Due to a bug in the firmware of the IIc+, internal and external drives continue running when using A2Desktop v1.1. IIc+DrvStop will disconnect and reconnect the drives, electronically, when needed. This reduces wear and tear on your drives as well as quieting the noise. CAUTION: IIc+DrvStop disconnects your drives by temporarily removing your computer's ability to recognize that the drives are present. You should never attempt to physically plug or unplug your drives to or from the computer while it is running. Doing so could electrically destroy your drives and your computer. NOTE: Once fully loaded into /RAM4, total files will use 163k of ram so a ram card of some sort will be needed. If you have a 1 mb ram card, you will have 861k remaining. 1. Whether you already have A2Desktop or not, you can download IIc+DrvStop.shk as well as A2Desktop at: http://www.chebucto.ca/Services/PDA/AppleIIMiscellaneous.shtml 2. Unshrink the SHK file to open 3 files: Selector.List, No.Floppies.bas, and Yes.Floppies.bas. A 4th file 'Hook.bin' is needed to make it all work. Hook can be obtained on SoftDisk #98 for $5.00USD and is available from Syndicomm at: http://www.syndicomm.com (look under their online store) 3. Move all but Selector.List along with a copy of Basic.System to the A2Desktop v1.1 system disk and place the files in the Desk.Acc folder. Put Selector.List in the directory with Prodos, replacing the Selector file you have now. CAUTION: If you have already modified your current Selector file, you can just modify it to add the ability to run No and Yes.Floppies rather than overwriting your current Selector.List. 4. Boot A2Desktop on your IIc+. The 4 files in the Desk.Acc folder will be added to /RAM4 automatically upon boot. Your Selector.List will be added to the drop-down menu selection. 5. Move any files/programs you wish to work with to /RAM4 as your drives will be inaccessable after No.Floppies is run. NOTE: If you are fortunate enough to have a hard drive on your IIc+, depending on the size (20, 40, 100mb and number of partitions), your partitions and 3.5" drives will be remapped by your computer and you will require modified versions of No.Floppies and Yes.Floppies so that your hard drive partitions will still be fully accessible while the drives have been quieted. Use Slot Scan (available free at this website) to determine to which slots and drive locations your partitions and 3.5" drives are being remapped and edit the BASIC files to change the pertinent slots to match your own. The current files were created on a IIc+ without a hard drive or CFFA card. 6. Run No.Floppies to disconnect your drives using the OA-1 command, the drop-down menu or double-clicking on the program itself from either the disk or /RAM4/Desktop/Desk.Acc. 7. Run Yes.Floppies using the OA-2 command, from the drop-down menu or from /RAM4/Desktop/Desk.Acc by double-clicking on the program to reconnect your drives when needed. Yes.Floppies cannot be run from the disk as the drives will be inaccessible until it has been run. 8. During disconnect and reconnect, the desktop will reload but your work in /RAM4 will be untouched, allowing you to save your work to your disks once they have been reconnected and then allowing you to disconnect them again. 9. If you experience any problems or have any further questions, you can contact us at: obsbedia2@aol.com or ab616@chebucto.ca SPECIAL THANKS: Hook.bin was written by the legendary Bill Tudor and without which this drive-running fix would not be possible. --------------------------------------------------------------------------
