The Program puts it PF Personal Fouls in the default Team category From: Dale Stevens To: Canadian University Basketball Discussion List Subject: Final 8 - Game 1 - Bishop's/Alberta The CIAU Men's Final 8 tipped off on Friday afternoon in Halifax. In the opening game, the 2nd-seeded Bishop's Gaiters, Champions of the QSSF, took on the 7th-seeded Alberta Golden Bears, one of the wild card qualifiers. In a game that wasn't decided until the final minute, the Gaitors topped the Bears 75-67. The Gaitors looked strong early on, opening up a 10-2 lead. But the Bears showed the grit that has brought much success this decade in the Metro Centre, scoring the next 13 points, including 3 3's in a row, to take a 15-10 advantage. The rest of the half was pretty much back and forth, with the Bears entering the locker room with a 33-29 lead. Each team shot 13-29 on the half, but the difference was from beyond the arc, where Alberta was 4-10, while Bishop's was 0-5. Despite trailing, the Gaitors held a 22-15 advantage on the boards. By the midway point of the second half, the Bears had opened up a 47-39 lead, but at that point, Bishop's picked up the defensive intensity, forcing 4 Alberta turnovers in a row, climbing back within 2 at 47-45. The loud and large Bishop's fan contingent made their presence felt at the Metro Centre, igniting their squad. After the teams traded baskets, the Gaitors hit their first "3" of the afternoon, to take a 50-49 advantage. Following an Alberta field goal, Joel Sherbino again hit from long range, and the Quebec champs led 53-51. But there is no quit in a Don Horwood-coached team, the the Bears clawed back to knot the score at 55, with 5:27 on the clock. With the Bears up 58-57, Gaitor Stewart Clark rebounded a missed shot, and attempted to slam it home. But he hung onto the rim for more time than is allowed, and was assessed a technical. The basket counted, but Alberta made 1-2 on the "T", to again tie the contest, this time at 59. The Gaitors seemed to be inspired by the technical, and responded with 4 quick points, to go up 63-59, with 2:45 remaining, prompting Horwood to take a timeout. Two free throws built the lead to 6 points, and an Alberta turnover and Gaitor hoops made it 67-59. The Bears responded with 3 points, to cut the advantage to 67-62 with 69 ticks on the clock. After Ryan Thorne made 1-2 from the charity stripe, the Bears scored in the paint, to make it 68-64 with 41 seconds remaining. Thorne was perfect on his next 2 free throws, but a Mark Filteau "3" made it 70-67 with 26.6 seconds on the clock. Another Bear foul, where Joel Sherbino hit 1-2. A Bear miss sent the Gaitors to the line once again, and the game was over. Bishop's advances to face the winner of the upcoming second game, between the 3rd-seeded Victoria Vikings, and the 6th-seeded Brandon Bobcats.
