Regina 40 Saint Mary's 36
Halifax: Sat Nov 18 2000:
Regina Rams continued their late-season march to the Vanier cup, scoring 16 unanswered late points to down Saint Mary's in the Atlantic Bowl. Rams' win was sparked by Neal Hughes kick returns of 89 yards for a TD, then 80 yards to set up the winning TD pass. SMU were prepared for Hughes, knew what to do, but simply couldn't match his speed once they gave him an opening.
It was a very good football game, with Regina's passing game overcoming SMU's ball-control ground game. The lead changed hands three times. The Rams recovered from a couple of bad losses in mid-season, and have now won 5 straight, four of them on the road.

Regina 25 Manitoba 22
Winnipeg: Sat Nov 11 2000: Regina Rams are showing the promise that came with them when they entered CIAU two years ago. They were 0-8 last season and stumbled at times this year to finish 4-4. Now in consecutive weekends they have knocked off 2nd place Calgary and 1st place Manitoba. In ice bowl conditions and trailing 22-18 with time running out the Rams began a long drive and scored on a 3rd and 10 pass with 0:08 left for the 25-22 win. The Rams beat the Bisons for the first time, beat the home crowd and beat the nasty weather that turned the field into a skating rink by game end. Rams were led by QB Darryl Leason who picked apart the Bison secondary for 416 yards and 2 TDs on a day when receivers had a clear advantage over defenders. Leason spread the ball around, but his favorite target was RB Neal Hughes who caught 10 for 206 yards, including the game winner. Manitoba opened the scoring on a missed Dimitri Scouras field goal midway through the first. Max Irabor plunged in for a 2-yard TD run to give the Herd an 8-0 lead late in the half. Regina could have been in the lead , but had a 65-yard Td reception called back and a TD catch dropped in the end zone. The turning point came with only :08 seconds left in the half as the Herd finished a last minute drive by being stopped on third-and-one from the Regina one. Regina struck for quick TDs in the third quarter, both short runs by Leason. Both times they failed on 2-point conversions and led 12-8 after three. Fourth quarter excitement grew when tailback Ken Vermette busted a 39-yard run at 4:00. to put Manitoba up 15-12. Leason hit Jason Clermont for a 5-yard TD pass two minutes later to go ahead 18-15. Manitoba QB Shane Munson hit slotback Mike Faisthuber on a 20-yard TD reception. Regina got the ball with 1:52 left and Leason marched the Rams downfield on an 11-play 86-yard drive. Rams stalled at the Bison 10 leaving one last chance on a third and 10. Leason hit Hughes with the clinching TD to send the Rams on to Halifax.

Saint Mary's 38 Acadia 18
Halifax: Sat Nov 11 2000: DE Kyl Morrison with four tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, 2 1/2 sacks and an interception return for a TD led the Huskies over Acadia. The Huskies racked up 436 yards in total offence and capitalized on 6 Acadia turnovers to cruise into the Atlantic Bowl. Three first quarter miscues by Acadia led to three SMU TDs. Midway in the first a fumble left SMU in good field position, then speedy Pat Thibeault got in behind the Acadia secondary and caught a 32-yard Ryan Jones TD pass to make it 7-0. After regaining possession on a bad 3rd down Acadia snap Ryan Jones quickly found Travis Tyler in the end zone for a 9 yard TD pass to go ahead 14-0. Then Morrison capped off the quick start by picking off a Kristin Pipe pass on the Acadia 37 and running it in untouched for a converted TD. The second saw little scoring, a Sharpe field goal for the Axemen, and a two-point safety for each team. SMU led 23-5 at the half. Luis Perz scored the only major in the third, a 3-yard run. In the fourth Saint Mary's had more of its kick return problems when a punt returner misplayed the catch on his own 12 where it was scooped up and run in for the TD by DB Jermaine Romans. Later SMU recovered with a 33 yard Jones to Jay Currie TD pass. Acadia closed out the scoring with 12-yard TD pass from Pipe to RB Andre Cockett. Saint Mary's QB Ryan Jones connected on 16-of-27 for 274 yards and three TDs. Luis Perez rushed for 76 yards and a Td on 16 carries, while Dean Jones gained 72 yards on 13 carries. Acadia's Pipe completed 18 passes for 201 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. Kyle Zurba gained 64 yards on 9 carries. For the second straight game Acadia was plagued by high snaps, no doubt caused by SMU's quick and hard hitting defensive line. SMU had 26 first downs to Acadia's 17, and outgained the Axemen 187-79 on the ground, and 274-201 through the air.

Laurier 30 Western 6 Waterloo ON: Sat Nov 4 2000 Golden Hawk kicker Ed Becker contributed Laurier's only 9 points of the first half. Strong defense by Donnie Ruiz, Rohan Thompson, Lee Cond, and Kojo Millington held the Mustangs scoreless in the first half. In the second, Mustangs came out on fire, with Mike O'Brien completing two field goals to make the score 9 to 6. A 6-yard TD run Hawk Justin Praamsma ended a long drive and increased Laurier's lead to nine and then, in what would prove to be the day's most exciting play, OUA all-star Andre Talbot ran the length of the field on a punt return to score an amazing touchdown. Ed Becker, completed the converts on both touchdowns making the score 23 to 6 at the end of the third quarter. Both teams played strong defense in the fourth, but again the Hawk's prevailed and scored yet another touchdown with a 1 yard run from Justin Praamsma. Ed Becker's convert would complete the scoring for the day, making the final 30 to 6 Laurier. Defensively the Hawk's played one of their strongest games of the year. Rohan Thompson led the team in tackles with 7, followed by Lee Cond with 6. Kojo Millington and David Agro also contributed 5 tackles each. Kevin Johnson, Andre Johnson, and Kevin Taylor all aided the Hawk's win with interceptions. Offensively the Hawk's netted 253 yards on the day with 183 yards rushing and 77 yards passing. Justin Praamsma rushed for 98 yards and earned two touchdowns. Andre Talbot ran for 136 yards including his 66-yard punt return for a touchdown. For the Mustangs, QB Mike O'Brien had a miserable day completing 15 of 40 passes for just 169, no touchdowns and three interceptions. On the ground, Fabian Rayne was grounded to a halt, amassing just 18 yards on 9 attempts. Drew Soleyn led all Stang rushers with 8 carries for 48 yards. The win for Laurier marked the first time that they had ever defeated Western twice in one season since 1973.

Hamilton: Nov 4 2000
McMaster used 21 straight third-quarter points to down Waterloo. Kicker Derek Livingstone opened the scoring for the Marauders on a 26-yard field goal. Marauder QB Ben Chapdelaine hit Mike Linton with a pass that was then stripped and Waterloo's Nate Martin recovered. Waterloo QB Jordie Holton hit Grant Baechler on a 24-yard pass to the McMaster one then handed off to Mike Bradley for the TD as the quarter ended. The point after was missed and Waterloo led 6-3. In the second on a third and one from the 39 Bradley took a pitch and broke clear for a TD. Mac's Ben Herbert took the kickoff at his 1 yard line and ran it back 46 yards to start a Mac drive. Kyle Pyear took it in from the 11. it was now 13-10 Waterloo. Derek Livingstone added a Mac field goal to end the half 13-13. In the third, Chapedelaine hit rookie Omar Sabri with a long pass and on the next play found wide open Kyle Pyear who went the rest of the way untouched for a 55-yard TD. Waterloo went three and out, then a bad punt and a penalty gave Mac the ball on the Waterloo 28. Chapdelaine's first pass found a wide open Sabri in the end zone. Leading 27-13 Mac got a 32-yard punt return from Chris Rankin, then Pyear pounded his way in for his third. Trailing 34-13 Waterloo QB Jordie Holton found Chris Krebich in the corner of the end zone to cut the lead to 34-20. In the fourth Warrior's Chris Waymouth blocked a Mac 51-yard FG try and Waterloo recovered the ball in Mac territory. Waterloo gambled on 3rd and 4 with a pitch to Bradley, who was stopped for a loss. Marauders added Kyle Pyear's 4th TD, then a Livingstone field goal to cap off the scoring.

On the next series UBC began to move the ball, but Bison LB Scott Coe picked off Shawn Olson at midfield. Ken Vermette then ripped off three successive long gains to put the Bisons at the goal line. After two failed attempts, QB Shane Munson fumbled on third and goal and was ruled down on contact, turning the ball over. UBC had 5:00 to drive the length of the field and try for a TD and a two point convert, but Joey Mikawoz nailed UBC tailback Sean Dovre in the end zone for a safety, putting the game out of reach.
