| Laurier 30 Western 6 Waterloo
ON: Sat Nov 4 2000 Golden Hawk kicker Ed Becker contributed Laurier's only
9 points of the first half. Strong defense by Donnie Ruiz, Rohan Thompson,
Lee Cond, and Kojo Millington held the Mustangs scoreless in the first
half. In the second, Mustangs came out on fire, with Mike O'Brien completing
two field goals to make the score 9 to 6. A 6-yard TD run Hawk Justin Praamsma
ended a long drive and increased Laurier's lead to nine and then, in what
would prove to be the day's most exciting play, OUA all-star Andre Talbot
ran the length of the field on a punt return to score an amazing touchdown.
Ed Becker, completed the converts on both touchdowns making the score 23
to 6 at the end of the third quarter. Both teams played strong defense
in the fourth, but again the Hawk's prevailed and scored yet another touchdown
with a 1 yard run from Justin Praamsma. Ed Becker's convert would complete
the scoring for the day, making the final 30 to 6 Laurier. Defensively
the Hawk's played one of their strongest games of the year. Rohan Thompson
led the team in tackles with 7, followed by Lee Cond with 6. Kojo Millington
and David Agro also contributed 5 tackles each. Kevin Johnson, Andre Johnson,
and Kevin Taylor all aided the Hawk's win with interceptions. Offensively
the Hawk's netted 253 yards on the day with 183 yards rushing and 77 yards
passing. Justin Praamsma rushed for 98 yards and earned two touchdowns.
Andre Talbot ran for 136 yards including his 66-yard punt return for a
touchdown. For the Mustangs, QB Mike O'Brien had a miserable day completing
15 of 40 passes for just 169, no touchdowns and three interceptions. On
the ground, Fabian Rayne was grounded to a halt, amassing just 18 yards
on 9 attempts. Drew Soleyn led all Stang rushers with 8 carries for 48
yards. The win for Laurier marked the first time that they had ever defeated
Western twice in one season since 1973.
McMaster 44 Waterloo 20
Hamilton: Nov 4 2000
McMaster used 21 straight third-quarter points to down Waterloo. Kicker
Derek Livingstone opened the scoring for the Marauders on a 26-yard field
goal. Marauder QB Ben Chapdelaine hit Mike Linton with a pass that was
then stripped and Waterloo's Nate Martin recovered. Waterloo QB Jordie
Holton hit Grant Baechler on a 24-yard pass to the McMaster one then handed
off to Mike Bradley for the TD as the quarter ended. The point after was
missed and Waterloo led 6-3. In the second on a third and one from the
39 Bradley took a pitch and broke clear for a TD. Mac's Ben Herbert took
the kickoff at his 1 yard line and ran it back 46 yards to start a Mac
drive. Kyle Pyear took it in from the 11. it was now 13-10 Waterloo. Derek
Livingstone added a Mac field goal to end the half 13-13. In the third,
Chapedelaine hit rookie Omar Sabri with a long pass and on the next play
found wide open Kyle Pyear who went the rest of the way untouched for a
55-yard TD. Waterloo went three and out, then a bad punt and a penalty
gave Mac the ball on the Waterloo 28. Chapdelaine's first pass found a
wide open Sabri in the end zone. Leading 27-13 Mac got a 32-yard punt return
from Chris Rankin, then Pyear pounded his way in for his third. Trailing
34-13 Waterloo QB Jordie Holton found Chris Krebich in the corner of the
end zone to cut the lead to 34-20. In the fourth Warrior's Chris Waymouth
blocked a Mac 51-yard FG try and Waterloo recovered the ball in Mac territory.
Waterloo gambled on 3rd and 4 with a pitch to Bradley, who was stopped
for a loss. Marauders added Kyle Pyear's 4th TD, then a Livingstone field
goal to cap off the scoring.

OTTAWA: Sat Nov 4 2000
Ottawa QB Phil Coté threw three TD passes and rushed for another
to lead the Gee-Gees to th win. The Gee-Gees had 375 yards of net offence
including 213 yards passing to McGill's 156 total yards and 108 passing.
Coté completed 12-of-21 for 168 yards with three TDs and one interception.
He also led the Gee-Gees rushing attack with 10 carries for 68 yards and
an 8-yard TD. Back-up QB James Baker completed 5-of-6 for 45 yards and
a TD. Ottawa's top receivers were Darryl Ray who caught six passes for
109 yards, and Jeremy White with four passes for 28 yards i and two TDs.
The Gee-Gees defence forced nine McGill turnovers; six interceptions, two
fumbles and once on downs. Ottawa CB Brad German returned an interception
40 yards for a TD. LB Teddy Neptune co-led the Gee-Gees with seven tackles
inlcuding four solos. Linebacker Mark Pretzlaff of Sherwood Park, Alta.,
also had seven tackles with two solos and one for loss. DB Scott Gordon
had a pair of interceptions to go with his four tackles. The Redmen were
without injured all-star receiver and return specialist Ben Wearing. McGill
QB Josh Sommerfeldt completed 4-of-9 passes for 34 yards and three interceptions
before leaving the game late in the first half with a broken jaw. Backup
QB Philippe Couillard connected on 7-of-19 for 74 yards and three interceptions.
Redmen's Jeff Derman had three catches for 41 yards. Nick Hoffmann ran
13 times for 46 yards. Kicker Anand Pillai opened the scoring with a 10-yard
field as the Redmen only trailed 7-3 after the first quarter . Linebacker
Mike Mahoney led McGill with 14 tackles with 10 solos and one interception.
DE Ryan Grad had eight tackles. This was the final game for McGill Head
Coach Charlie Baillie who retire after 29 seasons.
Laval 17 Bishop's 14

Defending Vanier Cup champion Rouge et Or jumped out to a 17-0 lead
and then held on for their 16th consecutive OQIFC victory to advance to
the Dunsmore Cup. Laval still led 17-7 with only 20 seconds left in the
game when Bishop's scored a late TD. Despite trailing all the way, the
Gaiters actually outgained Laval in total yards 484-386. Laval QB Francois
Chapdelaine completed 21-of-37 for 263 yards, including one TD and three
INT. He also rushed twice for 13 yards and a TD. His favourite target was
Jean-Frederic Tremblay who caught six passes for 89 yards and one TD. Laval's
leading rusher Mathieu Brassard gained 66 yards on 19 carries. Kicker Nicolas
Racine opened the scoring with a 23-yard field goal. Defensively, LB Etienne
Vanslette had 11 tackles, including 4 solos as well as a forced fumble.
DB Patrick Boies had nine tackles. Bishop's QB Sylvain Desrochers was 21
of 42 for 303 yards. He also rushed for 19 yards on six carries. Receiver
Dennis Halfpenny caught 7 passes for 125 yards. Bishop's Tds came from
Andre Bynoe on a one-yard run and from tight end Curtis Barr on a 3-yard
reception with only 20 seconds remaining. Bishop's RB Ben Ouimet had 72
yards on the ground on 13 carries, and caught six passes for 97 yards.
Bishop's LB Matt Robichaud had 10 tackles He also had an interception and
a knockdown. LB Martin Laperriere led Bishop's tacklers
Manitoba 14 UBC 4
Winnipeg: Sat Nov 4 2000
Manitoba Bisons advanced to the Hardy Cup next weekend in a defensive
battle with UBC Thunderbirds. Manitoba ground out their first playoff win
in 30 YEARS by pounding the ball on the ground all day and eventually wearing
out the UBC defense. Manitoba recovered a UBC fumble on the second play
of the game and promptly marched the ball down to the UBC 1 yard line.
UBC's defense stripped fullback Max Irabor as he attempted to plunge into
the end zone. The game stayed scoreless until Bisons' Dimitris Scouras
nailed a 21 yard field goal midway through the second quarter. He added
a
single with 2:30 remaining in the Second. Manitoba led 4-0 at the half.
With the wind in the third quarter, Duncan O'Mahony put UBC on the board
with a 48 yard single on a missed field goal. Early in the fourth quarter
he tied the game with a 15-yd FG. With the wind in the fourth, Manitoba
turned HB Ken Vermette and FB Max Irabor loose. With the ball at midfield,
Irabor burst through the UBC line for 37 yards. Three plays later, Vermette
ran it in from the 8 for the go-ahead score. On the ensuing kickoff, Dimitris
Scouras boomed an 85 yard single to put the Herd up by 8 with 13:00 remaining.
On the next series UBC began to move the ball, but Bison LB Scott Coe picked
off Shawn Olson at midfield. Ken Vermette then ripped off three successive
long gains to put the Bisons at the goal line. After two failed attempts,
QB Shane Munson fumbled on third and goal and was ruled down on contact,
turning the ball over. UBC had 5:00 to drive the length of the field and
try for a TD and a two point convert, but Joey Mikawoz nailed UBC tailback
Sean Dovre in the end zone for a safety, putting the game out of reach.
Regina 33 Calgary 32
Calgary: Nov 4 2000
The Rams finally filled a bit of the promise they carried into the
CIAU. Rams QB Darryl Leason engineered 23 4th quarter points as the Rams
came-from-behind for a 33-32 win over Calgary in the CW semi. Punter Jon
Ryan broke a 32-32 tie with a 36-yard single on the final play of the game.
Trailing 32-18 with 6:30 remaining, Leason fired a 30 yard pass to Shane
Ostapowich to cut the margin to 32-25 at 8:05 of the fourth. Two minutes
later, he tied the game with 5-yard pass to Jason Clermont. Leason connected
on 30/43 passes for 440 yards and 4 TDs. Clermont caught 8 for 134 yards
and two TDs. Neal Hughes led Rams rushing with 17 carries for 87 yards.
Dinos' Lincoln Blumell was 18 for 30 for 295 yards and three TDs, including
a pair of 18 and 32 yard TD passes to Geoff Drover, who led Calgary receivers
with 10 receptions and 206 yards. RB Dean Fisher carried 15 times for 74
yards before leaving the game with an injury early in the 2nd. Rams outgained
Dinos 588-500, and had no turnovers in the game. Chris Warnecke scored
the other Rams major on a 29-yard pass from Leason. Scott Wenz scored Calgary's
other major on a one-yard run. |
