This Tuttle information comes from a variety of sources. Our first version came from the Book of John Tuttle and other local sources as collected and hand copied by Thomas and Claudia Kinraide during their honeymoon visit to the Wallace Bay area in July and August of 1938.
We own a copy of the 2nd edition of The Valley of the Remsheg or History of Wallace Bay Nova Scotia by H. R. Brown, published in 1973.
We have a copy of The Cemetries of North Cumberland by Joyce Aitchison Wills and have spent some time searching cemeteries in the area.
We have also done additional research using the internet. We show details for a second line of descent because we recently discovered that the maiden name of a friend is Tuttle and she is in that line.

Tuttle Ancestry

Tuttle Lines in America by Prof. Alva M. Tuttle as quoted by H. R. Brown in 1973 edition of The Valley of the Remsheg. Prof. Alva M. Tuttle says the name Tuttle seems to have been derived from a place-name such as Tot-hill or Tuet-hill -- a place to watch from or a sentry post. There were several such hills in various parts of England and Wales.

George Frederick Tuttle in The Descendants of William and Elizabeth Tuttle gives the following information. Although the Anglo-Saxons may have used such hills as lookout stations, still many of them may have been of ancient British origin and derivation. The fact that their location is commonly close to roads, favors the opinion that they were sacred to the Celtic Teutates, who was the guide over the hills and trackways. So the name Tuttle is traced back to natural or artificial mounds or hills in Britain, which two thousand years ago were sacred to a pagan worship, and thence to the deified founder, Thoth. Thoth seems to have been the founder of the Egyptian Civilization. The first month of the Egyptian year was called Thoth, and began about our 20th of July. Thoth is the inventor of commerce, letters, music and reckoning of time. The meaning of the word Tothill is "The Hill of God".

Richard Tootill (1530-1589) was probably the son of Thomas Toleyll (1506- ) of Woodford.
Symon Tootill (1560 - ? ) was the son of Richard (1530-1589) and Elizabeth Tootill of Woodford, County Northampton, England.
William Tootill (1607-1673) was the son of Symon (1560- ? ) and Isabel Wells Tootill of Ringstead, County Northampton, England.

First Generation in North America
"Passengers by the Planter", April 2d, 1635, lists William Tuttell, husbandman, age 26, Elizabeth Tuttell, age 23, John Tuttle age 3 1/2, Anna Tuttle, age 2 1/4, Thomas Tuttell, age 3 months.

Also listed are John Tuttell a mercer age 39 and Joan Tuttell age 42 who settled in Ibswich, Massachusetts and is thought to be William's brother.

A third Tuttle family was also on board: Richard Tuttell, husbandman age 42, Ann Tuttell age 41, Anna Tuttell age 12, John Tuttell age 10, Rebecca Tuttell age 6, and Isabella Tuttell (supposed mother of Richard) age 70. Thus it seems that Isabel Wells Tootill and three of her sons and their families were on board. Richard's family settled in Boston. Nine more children were born in America and not one died young.

William's family landed first in Charlestown, Massachusetts and moved as first settlers to New Haven, Connecticut in 1640.

8) Elizabeth Tuttle, bap. in New Haven, Nov. 9, 1645; married Nov. 19, 1667, Richard Edwards a cooper; settled in Hartford, Connecticut. This was apparently a tempestuous marriage and it ended in 1691 with divorce. Nevertheless, Elizabeth is known as ancestress to several notable Americans.

-- ii. Timothy Edwards, born May 14, 1669; married Nov 6, 1694 Esther Stoddard (born June 2, 1671, died about 1762, 2nd child of Rev. Solomon Stoddard of Northampton, Mass). Timothy received both Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees from Harvard on July 4th, 1694 and preached in East Windsor Connecticut for almost sixty years. Timothy and Esthers had eleven children who were all girls except one.
Their fifth child was Jonathan, born Oct 5, 1703 in Windsor, Connecticut; m. July 28, 1727 Sarah Pierpont. Jonathan received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale in September 1720. After more years at Yale he received his degree of Master of Arts in September 1723. On Feb. 15, 1727 he was ordained as colleague with his grandfather at Northampton and continued there for 23 years. In 1757 he was elected as the successor to Rev. Aaron Burr (his son-in-law) as President of New Jersey College (Princeton) and took office in January.

Second Generation in North America
Joseph Tuttle (1640-1690) was the 6th son of William (1607-1673) and Elizabeth Tuttle of Ringstead, England and New Haven.
Joseph Tuttle was baptised in New Haven, Nov. 22, 1640; married May 2 1667, Hannah Munson, born June 11, 1648, daughter of Capt. Thomas Munson.
Thomas Munson came in the ship Elizabeth to Boston in 1634; rem. to Hartford and was of the Hartford Contingent under Capt. Mason at the destruction of the Pequot Fort. In 1675 he commanded the New Haven troops who, at Norrituck, defended the plantation against the Indians. His military rank was Capt. He was representative in the General Assembly 24 sessions from 1666 to 1683. c. 1685.

Third Generation in North America
Stephen Tuttle (1673-1709) was the 3rd child of Joseph (1640-1690) and Hannah Munson Tuttle of New Haven, Connecticut.
(Stephen is descended from William and Elizabeth Tuttle through Joseph.) Stephen Tuttle was born May 20, 1673; rem. to Woodbridge, N. J., where his name first appears on land record, April 17, 1695, as grantee of 6 acres of high land, which was laid out to him Dec. 21, same yr. He bought 6 acres adjoining of John Robinson, blacksmith, deed dated Nov. 13, 1701, in which Joseph Tuttle is named. At town meeting Jan. 1, 1697, Stephen Tuttle was chosen constable for the year ensuing. Stephn married in Woodbridge, N. J. by Samuel Hale, Justice of the Peace on Sept. 12, 1695, Ruth Fitz Randolph of Woodbridge, of the family from which Gov. Randolph is descended. (In The Valley of the Remsheg his wife is listed as Ruth Higgins.) His will was dated Oct. 20, 1709 and recorded in Trenton, N. J. same year.

Timothy Tuttle (1696 - 1754) and Cecilia Moore

Fourth Generation in North America
Timothy Tuttle (1696-1754) was the first son of Stephen Tuttle (1673-1709) and Ruth Fitz Randolph.
(Timothy is descended from William and Elizabeth Tuttle through Joseph, and Stephen.) Timothy Tuttle was born in Woodbridge, N.J. Oct. 16, 1696. Timothy and his brother Joseph settled in Newark, N.J. In 1728 Timothy was chosen "Clerk of Strays." In 1730-31;, fence viewer, and one of the overseers of the poor, and in 1732 he was chosen Assessor; no mention in Newark Records after 1732. The brothers removed to Hanover, Morris Co., about 1733. Timothy Tuttle, Esq., Justice of the Peace, d. Dec. 31, 1754. Timothy married Cecilia Moore, whose burial July 3, 1768 is the first record on the Morristown Bill of Mortality.

United Empire Loyalists who emigrated to Nova Scotia

First Generation in the Maritimes of Canada
Stephen Tuttle (1733-1818) was the son of Timothy Tuttle (1696-1754) and Cecelia Moore of Woodbridge, New Jersey
(Stephen is descended from William and Elizabeth Tuttle through Joseph, Stephen and Timothy.) Stephen was born in New Jersey in 1733 and lived there unitl some time around 1770 when he moved to the Province of New York where he acquired an estate near Fort Edward on the Hudson River and was a land Surveyor by profession. He was married twice but the name of his first wife is not known. The names of the children are remembered as George, Abraham, Thomas, and Jemina. There may also have been a Timothy Tuttle born after 1760.

Stephen's second wife was Mary Graham. Mary Graham is believed to be the daughter of John Graham of Bedminister, Somerset County, New Jersey. John Graham was the son of James Graham who was born in Scotland and settled in Monmouth County, New Jersey.
Stephen Tuttle and Mary Graham were United Empire Loyalists and emigrated to Canada as described in the story below. Stephen died at the age of 85 years in Wallace, Nova Scotia. They are both buried in the Old Pioneer Cemetery in Wallace Bay, Nova Scotia (also known as the A. M. Peers buring ground).

The Tale of Loyalists Stephen Tuttle and Mary Graham

Stephen Tuttle (c) (1733-18..) was born in New Jersey and lived there until some time around 1770 when he moved to the Province of New York where he acquired an estate of 1800 acres, more or less, near Fort Edward on the Hudson River. He was a land surveyor by profession and became Surveyor General for the Province. He was also a Justice of the Peace and a leading citizen generally.

He was married twice but the name of his first wife is not known and her children are rather a mystery. At one time Stephen stated that he had sent "five sons to serve in the British Army" but the Reverend G.W. Tuttle says that the first family adhered to the rebel cause and the names remembered by his grandmother included only three boys. Whether they were Rebels or Loyalists it is remarkable that all the research which has been conducted has revealed no clue.

Stephen was married the second time around 1765, several years before his removal from New Jersey to Fort Edward. His wife was Mary Graham and Mr. Ralph Putnam (c3466) gives us the most information about her available to date. It is reasonably certain that she was the daughter of John Graham of Bedminister, Somerset County, New Jersey. John Graham was the son of James who was born in Scotland and settled in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Mary Graham, daughter of James, Married the Rev. James McCrae. It was their daughter, Jane, a first cousin of Mary Graham Tuttle who, on her way to be married was attacked by a band of Indians and with her escort killed and scalped. This was August 1777 and was the cause of a great deal of mental distress for Mr. Tuttle.

From the first Stephen was consistently opposed to the Revolution. A part of his submission to the Royal Commission on Loyalist Claims states "At the breaking out of the troubles in 1774 he was offered a Company in the Rebel Service, which he refused. He steadily and uniformly acted a loyal part, he never took and Oath to the Americans altho' it was tendered to him many times and he was threatened for his refusal. General Benedict Arnold threatened to hang him." The pressure became so great that in May 1779 he fled to Canada leaving his wife and family to follow, if and when they could. In September 1779, Col. Goose Van Schaick wrote Governor Clinton "Major John Graham of my regiment is desirous of obtaining a Flag to get his sister with a large family of small children, conveyed to Canada to join her husband who left her in the month of May with very little to support them." Governor Clinton consented to the removal of Mrs. Tuttle and family and suggested to Gen. Schuyler that they be exchanged for the wife and family of Col. Campbell, captured by the British, at Cherry Valley, a year previously and held prisoner in Canada.

We next hear of him in a roster of Loyalists quartered at St. John's, Quebec, in March 1781, which shows Stephen Tuttle, aged 50, of the County of Albany with wife and five children, drawing a pension of 14 pounds. He was to state that he was later, 1783, living 120 miles above Quebec. In this period he is said to have been employed by the British Authorities in surveying land grants around Carlisle in the Gaspe Peninsula. This is supported by the fact that the High Sheriff of Gaspe testified in his behalf before the Royal Commission.

Why Stephen decided to take his three oldest sons -- oldest of second family -- and come to Remsheg is a question which is not likely to be definitely answered. Early in his research the author was told that he was engaged in the survey of the Remsheg Grant, in fact some said that he was in charge of it, and liking the country decided to stay. That theory fails to be accepted for the survey of the Remsheg Grant must have been made not later than 1783 at a time when Stephen, according to his own statement, was domiciled in Quebec. We think that he learned that many of his old colleagues and friends, from New Jersey and New York were settling in Remsheg area in Nova Scotia and he came intending to join them, if satisfied with the country, and brought the boys with him to aid in the task of building a home.

As will be seen later, records show that the baby, Sarah, was left behind in New York and grew up and married there. She was probably cared for, by and reared, as a member of the Graham family. The report on the St. John's refugee camp in 1781, showing five children, is evidence that the youngest boy, Guy, was alive at that time, but he is not again heard of so must have died no long afterward. Tradition does not tell us how long it took Stephen and the boys to become established but it was probably some months, at least. However the time came when they were ready to set up house-keeping and the father wished to make the trip to Quebec to bring his wife and youngest son to Nova Scotia. He had not proceeded far into what is now New Brunswick, when he met a band of Indians who asked him to come to their camp where they had a white woman. He was reluctant to lose the time it would take but consented to go with them. His surprise was great to find there his wife and son. Weary with waiting, Mary had induced Peter to accompany her in an attempt to find their way through the woods to Nova Scotia. So came Tuttle to Remsheg and finally to Wallace Bay.

In following the career of Stephen, the role of Mary is all too likely to be minimized. Here was a woman evidently reared in a home of culture and refinement; her marriage to the widowed but prosperous and respected Stephen Tuttle indicated that the manner of life, to which she had been accustomed, would continue. Then came the Revolution: the Graham family and, no doubt, Mary herself, sympathized with the Rebel cause and it must have been with much regret that she found herself so deeply involved with the opposing side. The heated arguments, with, and estrangement from friends and neighbours, the intimidation and threats from Rebel leaders, the furtive coming and going, at all hours of the night, of Loyalists agents and escaped POWs the restrictions imposed on their way of life by the constant expenditure of money to provide the agents and POW's - with arms, ammunition and food must have had a demoralizing effect on her morale, to say the least, all culminating with the tragic death of her much loved cousin, Jane McCrae. Then to add to the drain on her health and peace of mind she had two babies between 1777 and 1779. Her youngest baby was baptized August 25, 1779 and leaving it behind she fled north, through the woods to join Stephen in September. The trip with five young boys to care for must have been a nerve-wracking experience. It has been said that her mind became unbalanced - little wonder. It has been suggested that her determination to walk to Nova Scotia, through the woods, was prompted by mental derangement; but it can be more reasonably attributed to the will of a brave and determined woman. She was not travelling through a trackless forest for French troops marched back and forth between Beausejour and Quebec and no doubt there was a well-defined trail and probably some improvement to the pathway.

In The Civil Sword -- James Delancey's Westchester Refugees by Gerald R. Vincent we find the following account.
Tuttle was early a motivating force in the Remsheg grant, though he had not himself been a serving member of the Westchester Refugees. He was born in New Jersey and settled, before the Revolution, in the Cumberland country of upper New York, some forty-seven miles abouve Albany. In 1779 he joined the British on Lake Champlain near his home, sent five sons to serve with the British Army, and after the war located in what are now the eastern townships of Quebec. He presented his claim for compensation at Halifax in December of 1785. At the hearing he produced -- among other documents of loss and loyalty -- a certificate from General Benedict Arnold. How did this man -- a surveyor with a withered arm -- come to Remsheg, so far from Albany and Quebec? The answer is uncertain. After the war he was employed in surveys around Carlisle, Quebec, however, and may have been engaged for like work at Remsheg. It has been contended that Tuttle was not involved in the Remsheg survey because he was in Quebec in 1783. Still, the Remsheg and Cobequid surveys were not completed until 1785, and therefore it is just possible that Tuttle was involved, and it is certain that he drew land with the Refugees. Tuttle's story is another classic loyalist epic, the stuff of nineteenth century novels, even to the improbably fortunate but well-documented meeting in the woods of New Brunswick with the wife he had left in Quebec. Tuttle had left Remsheg to collect his wife and family from Carlisle; she had already left Carlisle to go to Remsheg to be with him. They met, but only by chance, and returned to Remsheg.

William Tuttle was born 26 June 1766 in Morris County, New Jersey. He married Elizabeth Peers who was born 12 May 1777 and died 12 November 1868. Elizabeth Peers was the daughter of Alexander Peers (1745-1816) and Mary Bolding (1745-1808). (Please see details below. Peers Genealogy)
Alexander and Mary were married 15 September 1766. They were one of the Loyalist families who founded Wallace, Nova Scotia. Alexander served during the American Revolution for the British Army under Col. James Delancy (DeLancey's Cowboys). Mary Bolding is said to be the daughter of Mary Howard of North Carolina. William died 22 July, 1852. William and Elizabeth are buried in Wallace Bay Cemetery, Nova Scotia.

1) Mary Tuttle born 1796, died 29 Nov 1889 aged 93 years, married John Ralston born 1794, died 12 Apr 1874, age 80 years. John was one of three brothers who came directly from Scotland. It is told that John never gave up the Scottish habit of wearing his plaid over his shoulder. To the natives this was simply a shawl and on a man created some amusement, as did his habit of carrying his knitting with him at all times.

Charles William Tuttle (c1.6.4) (son of James) was married to Harriet Ann Harrison and they had eleven children: Austen, Roy, Earl, Dorothy, Edward, Bryand, Hazel, Ranald, Leah, Harriet and Russell. The following are excerpts from the local Cambridge, Idaho newspaper. "The News" and related to the Botulism poisoning tragedy which killed the six members of the Tuttle family. January 24, 1922. "With two already dead and four others not expected to live until Wednesday morning, physicians are working Tuesday night in an effort to save the family of Charles W. Tuttle from extinction. The two deaths and serious illness of other members of the family are believed to be due to eating canned greens served at the birthday dinner on Sunday, for the 14 year old daughter and sister, Harriet. The little girl, under school supervision canned the greens. In brief summary: Hazel died on Monday evening, January 23rd. Harriett died on Tuesday morning, January 24th, Bryan died on Wednesday morning January 25th, Edmund died on Wednesday night, January 25th, Ranald died on Wednesday night, January 25th. Charles , and the father, died on Thursday morning, January 26th. Russell survived the illness. Harriet Ann, the mother, had died in 1920 of stomach ulcers.

William Tuttle was born 15 December 1803 in Wallace, Nova Scotia, died 6 November 1865 in Amherst, Nova Scotia. Olivia Roblee Peers (6th child of Hannah Robblee and John Peers) was born November 23, 1812 in Nova Scotia, and died January 16, 1874 in Amherst, Nova Scotia. William Tuttle and Olivia Roblee Peers were married 28 June 1828 in Wallace, NS by D. M. McFarlance Esq. Olivia's father John Peers was the brother of William's mother Elizabeth Peers, so they were first cousins. For a while after their marriage they lived on the farm no best known as "The Charlie MacDonald Farm". They then moved to Moncton and later settled in Salem, Cumberland County, NS on the farm later owned by Mrs. Burton Tuttle and daughter Marion.

William and Olivia are buried in Old West Amherst Cemetery, Nova Scotia.

Notes for William Tuttle: After the death of Joseph Robblee in 1828, land left to him by his father, John, was settled in 1832. The portion bequeathed to his brother, Thomas, was sold to a William Tuttle and Thomas held the mortgage. In his will of 1849, Thomas, leaves the matter to be settled by his sons. If Wm. Tuttle clears the mortgage, he is to be given clear title.

John Tuttle was born Sunday 29 December 1767. He married Helener Horton and (2) Katherine Thompson. He died 30 December 1835. Helener Horton was born Saturday, 5 May 1770 and died 5 November 1818 (age 48 years and 6 months). John and Helener are buried in the Old Methodist Cemetery, Wallace, NS.

Much of the following information about the line of John Tuttle comes from a photocopy of a hand copy of "The Book of John Tuttle". This copy was made by Thomas Reed Kinraide and Claudia Bassett Kinraide during their honeymoon visit to the Wallace Bay area in July and August of 1938.
Thomas Reed Kinraide is the son of Thomas Burton Kinread/Kinraide and Ethel Sugg Ford, and grandson of Thomas Kinread and Hannah Elizabeth Tuttle. At that time "The Book of John Tuttle" was in the possession of William Hibbert Peers and Phoebe Alice Peers, children of Helener Anne Tuttle and Solomon Peers.

8) George Tuttle (half brother) born 15 March 1823, married Susan (Susanna) McKim (1827-1900). George kept a small store where outgo exceeded income. When threatened with goal he and Susan moved to Illinois. After a couple of years George went out one day and did not return. He was reported to have been accidentally killed. Susan moved back to Wallace Bay. Some years later George reappeared with a negro servant and a pair of white mules. He was supposed to have "struck it rich" in the California Gold Fields but his wealth soon vanished leaving only a wealth of tales of the "wild and wooly west". George died 13 September 1908. He is buried in Wallace Bay Cemetery with wife and children.

Second Generation in the Maritimes of Canada
Peter Graham Tuttle (1772-1850) married Elizabeth Hunter. Peter was his mother's companion on the long and hazardous trip, through the woods, from Quebec Province, to Nova Scotia. In the 1827 census he is listed as the proprietor of "Tuttle's Inn" or "Tavern", a small red house, which stood in the southwest corner of Wallace's Main Street and the station road. Peter died 16 January 1850 aged 74 years and Elizabeth died 3 February 1852 age 62 years. They and their son Stephen are buried in the Old Methodist Cemetery in Wallace, Nova Soctia.

Alexander Peers (1746 - 1816) and Mary Bolding (1745 - 1808)

First Generation in the Canadian Maritimes
Note: Alexander Peers and Mary Bolding were married 15 September 1765. They were loyalists from Dutchness County, New York (near Sleepy Hollow Brook).
In his refugee claim he stated that in 1775 he was living, as a farmer, on the Phillips Manor estate in Dutchness County, New York. In 1776 he harboured one of Col. Rogers' officers and raised recruits for the British Army. Col. James Delancy was recruiting a regiment of Light Horse and offered an officer's commission to anyone who would recruit enough men to serve under him. Alexander attempted this but, being unsuccessful, enlisted himself, as a private and served to the end of the war. His two oldest sons served under Capt. Purdy during the last two years of the war. Ephraim was 16 years old when he joined in 1783. John was only 14 years old when the family came to Nova Scotia so he was too young to serve. Once Alexander, serving with the Loyalist Army, slipped home for a brief visit. Surprised by a party of rebels he hid in a small space beneath the kitchen floor. The rebels had found his horse so knew he was in the vicinity. They tried to make Daniel, then a child of five or six years reveal his father's hiding place. Daniel stoically bore the pain of a severe beating and refused to divulge the place of refuge. Alexander managed to escape, surprise their watchman, and ambush the main party.

The lost farm was near Sleepy Hollow Brook close to the mouth of the Pocantico River on the Hudson. This area was settled before 1680 by Frederick Phillipse from East Friesland in Holland who purchased land from the Indians. The Phillips were also Loyalist so were driven out, but the Manor still stands 300 years later.

Alexander Peers was born 7 May 1746, died 28 February 1816. He served as a private until the Revolutionary end of the war.
Mary Bolding was born 3 February 1745 and died 3 March 1808. She said that her mother was Mary Howard from North Carolina.
(Bolding appears to be the old spelling of Baldwin.) Alexander and Mary are buried in the old Dotton graveyard in North Wallace, Nova Scotia.

Some tourist seeing some long-legged birds (cranes) in the Wallace Bay, asked what they were. An ancient resident answered, "Oh, they're Peers." The Peers family were all tall between 6 feet and 6 feet 6 inches.

Note regarding Thomas O'Brien Akerley (son of Zillah Peers): A skilled shoemaker, he suffered an attack of rheumatic fever which left him crippled. Nevertheless in 1886 he moved with his small family to an old log house on the bank of Long Creek. Eventually he cleared land and built a house and barn by carrying lumber from the nearby water-powered sawmill. In time, good-sized fields had been cleared and there were crops of hay and grain, cows, sheep, three horses, apple and plum trees. Out of the wilderness a comfortable home had been carved.

Jerush was about twelve years old when the family came to Nova Scotia and eighteen when she married. Daniel Teed of Delaware, New York, was a drummer in the Royal Forces during the Revolutionary War, being too young for a soldier.

John Brown (1742 - 1790) and Amy Wilson

First Generation in the Canadian Maritimes
John Brown (1842-1790) married Amy Wilson
John Brown and perhaps also his wife Amy Wilson are believed to have come from Yorkshire, England. He had settled in America in 1750 at Horseneck, Westchester County, which is entirely in the State of New Jersey. He joined the British April 28, 1777 at Kings Bridge. He served under Col. Delancy, and Col. Hamilton until the spring of 1778 when he was taken prisoner by the rebels and held for six months. We have no explanation of his escape. He joined Col. Emerick's command with whom he served for one and a half years to the end of the war.

The Westchester Refugee Claim of John Brown states the following:
"He left New York in the summer of 1783. Sent his claim to Col. Delancey. Native of England. Settled in America 7 or 8 years before the Rebellion. Lived at Horse Neck. When Trouble began, joined the British in 1777, at King's Bridge. Served with Col. Delancey then under Col. Hamilton, afterwards with Col. Emerick as private, then with Col. Hatfield and continued in service the whole war. Now settled at Fannings Borough. Was possed of house and 5 acres in Horse Neck. Purchased the Land at 50 shills. per acre and built a new stone house. Made a stone fence and planted fruit trees of various kinds. Values it at 50 pounds. Lost Wheat, Household stuff, one Cow."

Notes from the Commission "A very fair man. To be allowed almost the whole of his demands. His property was sold by the Americans for 135 pounds. The Brown lot of five acres has been located in what is now the expensive Short Hill area of Essex County.

From July 15, 1783 to March 20, 1784, he lived at Cumberland (Fort, Ed.). Fannings Borough was an early name for the Remsheg townsite. Col. Edmund Fanning held a grant for all of Fox Harbour including Oak Island. The road to Remsheg was historically known as the Fanning-borough Road.

Rumble -- crash -- boom the thunder rolled away following the lightning flash and left stark tragedy behind it. Two boys, one a lad of sixteen, and the other only six, gazed with horror-stricken eyes upon the lifeless bodies of father and sister while a baby boy cried in terror as he fell from his dead father's arms. The 1790 summer day had been close and hot with scarcely a breath of air. When the thunder-head rolled down from the west with its promise of cooling rain, John Brown gratefully left his work in the field to seek the shelter of his log cabin. There he took his one-year old baby boy in his arms and sat down before the open door to watch the welcome shower. His fourteen-year old daughter stood beside him with her arm across his shoulders. Then the lightning flash and instant death for the man and girl while the baby escaped injury of any kind. John Brown, U. E. L. 1742-1790, Amy Wilson ( ? - 1789) (his wife) and Susanna (1776 - 1790) (his daughter) are buried in the Pioneer Cemetery in Wallace Bay, Nova Scotia. After the death of his father and sister, Abraham Brown then six years old was taken into the home of Ezekiel Peers. His brother Isaac was eight or nine months old, motherless, baby when his father was killed. Alexander Peers and his wife took the baby into their home and raised his as a son. When Isaac was twenty and Alexander's grand-daughter Mary was fifteen they were married. When Alexander died in 1816 he bequested his land-divided fairly equally between Isaac and Mary's father, his son, Ezekiel.
