The Threats
Nuclear and Radiological threats come
in two varieties: The blast, heat, and radiation associated with an
atomic or hydrogen bomb detonation; and Exposure
to radioactive materials, whether by accident or by design.

A-Bombs and H-Bombs
In the case of detonation of a nuclear or
thermonuclear weapon, the truth is that very little in terms of defensive
measures can be done by those within the primary blast radius.
Generally those who survive within the primary damage radius will be
people wearing heavy clothing who were inside basements or otherwise
shielded from the intense energy release of the first few seconds
after the event. If you have an opportunity to react, then dive into
a ditch or depression, or behind a massive building. Don't look at
the blast. Shutting your eyes is not
enough protection. After the initial blast, heat,
and radiation, comes the fallout, which will drift on the wind,
contaminating locations downwind from Ground Zero.
Survivors inside the secondary radius will remain underground for 72
hours, breathing filtered air. When they come up they will
leave the area immediately and never go back. Beyond these
drastic measures very little can be done to influence survivability
in the moments after a detonation.

Dirty Bomb
A much more likely scenario involves dispersal of
radioactive material in an urban setting, possibly exposing a large
number of people. This is the "Dirty Bomb" scenario.

You have two friends when under threat from radiation: distance,
and mass . The intensity of most dangerous forms of radiation
decreases rapidly over distance. So get the heck away from it. If
that's not possible, then a lot of matter will slow and eventually
stop most of the radiation energy. Cars, frame buildings, concrete
buildings, and subterranean basements are best in increasing order
of safety. Get away from the suspected radiation source. Get inside.
And don't breathe any dust. Tiny specks of radioactive substances
like plutonium are so poisonous they will eventually kill you if you
ingest them.

Iraqi officials 'held secret talks with Bin Laden'
Saddam Hussein's top intelligence officials held
secret talks with Osama bin Laden, US Secretary of
State Colin Powell claimed, as he set out America's
case for war with Iraq. Addressing the United Nations
Security Council in New York, Mr Powell used satellite
photographs and intercepted telephone calls to spell
out how the US believed Iraq was continuing to work on
its banned weapons programmes. He said the US had
uncovered evidence that Iraq was using a fleet of
mobile production units to conceal its biological
weapons programme from the UN inspectors; had tested
chemical nerve agents on death row prisoners and was
still trying to acquire materials to build a nuclear
bomb.
