I am forwarding the following message from Dr. Bryan G. Dobbs to
you for a number of reasons. First, it was the original message
to which he refers which gave rise to my earlier discussions of
hoaxes and their consequences.
Secondly, because Dr. Dobbs is now confirming that the original
report this instance, after it had been declared a hoax, proved,
upon close and continuing examination by two colleagues, to be
true, i.e. that the Israeli embassy has confirmed that rabbis and
their students long resident in Shiraz or other centres in Iran
have been arrested on charges based on their study of Jewish
scriptures. Historically, Iran has been a relatively tolerant
country in regard to Jewish religious observance.
Lastly, as a Canadian the use of "quiet diplomacy" by Israel has
an appeal all of its own. On the other idea, I would concur with
Dr. Dobbs' suggestion that we would want to hear some indication
of progress from the Israeli embassy within the next few weeks.
I trust that all who are committed to human rights and
fundamental freedoms and who receive this note will share my
concern for these hostages with their friends and colleagues.

PLEASE READ THIS MESSAGE, MAKE A NOTE OF THE NAME AND EMAIL
ADDRESS OF THE SENIOR ISRAELI OFFICIAL MENTIONED AND THEN
FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO EVERYONE TO WHOM YOU HAD SENT THE
ORIGINAL MESSAGES, ASKING THEM TO DO LIKEWISE.
Dear Friends:
You are all aware that [shortly after the sudden and tragic
death of my son and without taking the precaution of
verifying sources] I sent out a widely disseminated message
regarding the arrest in Shiraz, Iran of approximately two
dozen rabbis and their students and of their imminent
execution.
At an early stage, no verification was forthcoming and the
person who sent me the message stated that she herself was
the recipient of it from someone who claimed it was a hoax.
I therefore sent all of you a message with my apology and
explanation.
HOWEVER, bits and pieces of the story continued to trickle
in and your concern for pikuah nefesh joined mine and those
of Rabbi Reuel Karpov, a true saint at a time of her own and
others' distress, and Kay Alexander of Duke U.P. who both
aided me in assembling as much data as there was/is.
I thereupon sent a message to His Excellency David Sultan,
the Ambassador of Israel to Canada and requested
confirmation, presenting in that message references to
reports of the utmost discretion in the Israeli media and
from personal correspondents.
I have just heard from the second person in the Israeli
embassy, Mr. Chen Ivri, Counselor [email (place his name in
the subject line) address: embisrott@cyberus.ca].
Mr. Ivri confirms officially on behalf of the Government of
Israel that:
1. this is NOT a hoax;
2. the arrests did take place;
3. the Government of Israel is aware of all of the above
and is using quiet diplomacy to achieve a safe resolution.
Counselor Ivri further stated that the official position of
his government is that public outcry at this time might have
harmful consequences.
I am, therefore, asking you, for the moment, to circulate
this message with the proviso that NO OTHER DIRECT ACTION BE
TAKEN FOR THE MOMENT.
You have Counselor Ivri's email address. He has informed me
that as soon as he receives further word, he will notify me.
Since he is receiving this message, all of whose recipients
are openly listed, I am herewith requesting that his reply
to me be sent to all of you as well.
If by Shavuot you have not heard from him or me, then I
suggest that on a daily basis you begin emailing him, faxing
and telephoning [funds permitting] him demanding an answer
and an action plan.
I am extending my mourning throughout the counting of the
omer. So please do not correspond me with me on this issue
unless there is something I, specifically, alone, can do.
You can be just as effective as your present correspondent.
I believe that I have now done everything that I could
responsibly do and henceforth my role will be circumscribed
as noted above.
My thanks to all of you for your concern.
May there soon be a favourable resolution to this problem.
