Friends,

Following is a list of recently updated topical Hansard files
available upon request. I have attempted, more so than in
previous notices, to provide very brief blurbs indicating what
the new content covers.

I hope some of the following items may be of interest.

mp

Nisga’a Treaty exchanges and comments, largely oppositioin
statements from Reform Mps. Most recently a statement by Indian
Affairs Minister Jane Stewart that under the treaty provincial
law will apply to matrimonial questions.

Kosovo & NATO intervention: the early unanimiity amongst the
parties in the House of Commons is ending as Reform protests the
Government is not supporting Canadian troops sufficienlty and
the NDP argues for diplomatic solutions. Meanwhile,
Conservative Senators continue to lay the foundation for a
pragmatic opposition.

Funding of Department of National Defence: In which the Reform
Party, the party which weeks to cut back almost every other area
of federal spending argues that the NATO intervention in Kosovo
should be the occasion for a massive increase in spending to
better equip Canadian troops.

Hepatitis C: Reform has decided that it is time to renew demands
for full compensation for all persons who have contracted Hep C
through the Canadian blood supply.

Worker Safety: Liberal backbenchers have discovered that April
28 is the national day of mourning for persons killed on the
job. Following the Liberal announcement to this effect PC and BQ
Members are quicki to join in the solemn declarations of piety.
No actual improvements in worker safety in fedrally regulated
industries are forthcoming on this solemn occasion.

Youth Criminal Justice Act: The Bloc Quebecois campaign for a
Quebec exemption from this bill to replace the Young Offenders’
Act because, they say, it is unduly harsh, does not meet the
needs of young people, and fails to reflect the values and
perpsective of Quebec culture. Perhaps this is an instance in
which the “Rest of Canada” might want to join Quebec and abandon
the McLellan-Grey Alberta Axis.y

Vosey Bay Nickel Project: A PC Motion (Charle Power, St. John’s
West) asking for the Government to intervene and to expedite a
“land claim and to expedit all environmental studies.”

Charter Rights and Preclearance for Travel to the U.S.: Bill
S-22, authorizing the United States to preclear travelles and
goods in Canada, was amended at third reading in the Senate to
protect the Charter Rights of Canadians being interrogated by
U.S. officers on Canadian soil.

Atlantic Fisheries. NDP MP Peter Stoffer congratulates the
Auditor General on his recently released report on the state of
the federal government’s management policies of the east coast
shellfish industry. The Auditor General’s report on the Atlantic
Shellfish and on the Atlantic Groundfish Strategy are available
from Mposluns@accglobal either in html or, very soon, in RTF or
on the net at
“http://www.oag-bvg.gc.ca/domino/other.nsf/html/99fo01_e.html”.
