Back in 1965 when I was a Cuso volunteer, I missed the language training
before taking up my assignment. I did get some tips about language
learning, however, and over the many years, increased and improved them,
having spent more time outside my home country than in it since then.
Recently I have been urged to put these into a training paper, have done
so, and made it available on the InterNet, at:

        http://www.scn.org/ip/cds/cmp/aural.htm

Where you can down load it for anyone taking up a post in a community where
there is a different language to learn. Although it is designed for
learning non written languages, it also can be used for written languages.
