Press Advisory

Attention all Fisheries and Environment Editors

Report on Dumping to be Released

Nova Scotia's Ecology Action Centre and the Conservation Council of New
Brunswick will be holding a press conference to announce the results of a
report they commissioned on dumping and discarding in the groundfish
fishery. While it is difficult to determine the extent of the problem,
fishermen reported that thousands of pounds of fish may be dumped by a
single boat on a fishing trip.

The report contains the results of interviews with skippers and crew
members in the mobile and fixed gear fleets, as well as fisheries
representatives and DFO officials. The two groups are deeply concerned
about the findings and are releasing the report on Wednesday, Dec. 2 in
advance of the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans visit to Halifax on
Thursday, Dec. 3rd.

The press conference will take place at 1:00, Wednesday, December 2nd at
the Maritime Museum on Water Street.
