Sunday February 7 - Visit to Proposed Dump Site in Tracadie Cross (PEI)

On Sunday February 7, Sierra Youth Coalition is organizing a visit to the
proposed dumpsite in Tracadie Cross.

People will gather at 1:00 PM outside of 81 Prince St. in Charlottetown, and
will then travel to the Tracadie Cross Community Centre to meet the members
of Tracadie Area Residents for Resource Protection (TARRP) who will be
conducting the tour. We will meet at the Community Centre at 2:00 PM and
travel to the proposed dump site.

The Tracadie site was ranked seventh out of the twenty options studied, yet
was unexplainably and unjustifiably selected by the government of PEI as the
preferred site on which to place the proposed landfill.

The site is an important wilderness area, containing eagles, bog, springs,
streams, and many other significant biological entities and is very
susceptible to groundwater contamination as well as numerous other
detrimental ecological impacts. This is certainly an issue that affects us all.

If it doesn't snow before then, we won't need snowshoes, but dress warm and
bring your hats, mitts, and scarves.

When Elizabeth May, the executive director of the Sierra Club of Canada,
toured the site in November, she commented "No matter what development was
being proposed for that site, you would have to wonder why. This island has
very few areas with those kinds of ecological characteristics."

The trip is intended to be an opportunity for Sierra Youth Coalition members
and interested public to see the site firsthand, and to learn more about the
issue.
If you have a vehicle and can offer someone a ride, or if you need a ride,
