I propose we here in the Maritimes should also give the cetacians
(whales, dolphins and porporses) "human" rights status. Then we should
enter into a formal negociation process for the sharing of the resources
of the seas, where they are the most intelligent permanent residents.

More immediately, the Georges Bank Review, for example, should have
included formal hearings in a manner convenient and understandable to the
cetacian residents of Georges Bank.

Comments?

       Going ape

From the editorial desk of the Ottawa Citizen:
Those unfamiliar with politics might be surprised that the New
Zealand parliament is debating giving the great apes human (or
primate) rights: to life, to freedom from cruel treatment, and not
to take part in harsh experiments.
Those who have watched a legislature at work, on the other hand,
will know very well why elected officials feel such kinship with
monkeys. True, the average orang-utan would feel embarrassed by
the mindless hooting and raw tribalism on display in our House of
       Commons.
But he would feel a distant kinship and sympathy with the odd
creatures, and would probably agree that they should not be the
subject of any crueler experiment than the televising of their
       antics.
