ATVs and Snowmobile owners are fighting to be included as authorised
users in the rails to trails projects across the Maritimes. While this
news item below freports on how polluting they are to the air, they are
even more damaging to habitat in the damage they do by thier passage.
They also transport hunters and trappers to areas that game might have
previously been able to retreat to for safety. Others that damage the
environment use these monsterous machines.

And each car and truck travels far more miles per vehicle than do ATVs
and snowmobiles

I urge you to keep and spread the attached article and use it at every
possible opportunity to oppose ATV and snowmobile use. They should simply
be banned outright, along with jet skis, IMHO. Only emergency rescue
should have these, I believe.

In the far north the situation is more complex, but I tend to think that
aborigional rights should include a comittment to use traditional tools,
such as dog sleds instead of snowmobiles.

Snowmobiles polluters

WASHINGTON (AP) - Smoke-belching snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles
are in for an overhaul. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is
ready to write the first emission standards for the machines after
finding they are the source of significant air pollution in some
   cities.
The machines emit 25 per cent as many hydrocarbons as all the cars and
trucks in the United States put together even though there are more
than 66 times as many cars and trucks in use, according to an EPA
   study.
