"A truly amazing documentary... it is the rare viewer who would not be
transformed by this story's urgency and passion," says Academy
Award-nominated filmmaker Atom Egoyan. In 1993 hundreds of women protesters
at Clayoquot Sound in BC were arrested and jailed for refusing to step
aside in the face of logging trucks intent on clearcutting some of the last
vestiges of the world's old growth temperate rainforest. There is a
revolution going on, of individuals no longer willing to impassively watch
the Earth being destroyed. And this revolution is being led largely by
women - it's estimated 80% of environmental activists worldwide are women.
In FURY FOR THE SOUND we watch women in their 70's and 80's being carted
off alongside pink-haired teenagers; we see 8-year-old children debating
uniformed RCMP, and women resisting arrest by suspending themselves from
trees. A moving account of grassroots social history in the making, this
documentary talks about much more than trees. As the story unfolds, it
becomes increasingly difficult to dodge the filmaker's (a Clayoquot
arrestee) underlying challenge: is there anything which we care enough
about to place before all else? For, as one protestor said, "everything is
on the line...even your personal freedom."
