How many of you have received that message promoting something called "the
great Canadian gas out"? This message has made the rounds, and is even
attracting media attention. I believe it is even more widely circulated
than the Canada Post email surcharge hoax. :)

On the one hand, it's encouraging to see my fellow Canadians united and
taking a stand on something. On the other hand, it's disappointing that the
unifying issue is the quest to keep gas prices affordable for the masses.
And so soon after Earth Day!

With wars and pestilence, refugees and homeless, environmental
catastrophe, habitat destruction, species going extinct, hungry children,
etc. etc. etc. ... I can think of a couple of better causes to support.

Especially when many of the above problems can be traced to our
consumption of fossil fuels.

Rather than gas up our private cars and SUVs and trucks on April 29 or May
1, as the "GAS OUT" message implores us to do [boy, that'll really teach
those oil companies!] I'd like to suggest something that will REALLY teach
the oil companies a lesson ...

On "GAS OUT" day (April 30) forget the GAS and get OUT of your car. Walk,
skate, bike or take public transit to work. Even car pool if you absolutely
must go in a car.

Say ... this could become a habit ... ;-)

The Earth, your health, your neighbours, your kids and other animals will
THANK you for it. And the oil companies? Well, isn't it about time they
got into another line of work? :)

for the dirt,
~paul :)
