[Forwarded from David Potter. Even if you don't have an email auto-responder, unsubscribing is a good idea if you won't be checking your email for a long time]. Well... it's VACATION time again! When people go on holiday and just before they walk out of the office they enable their vacation message. Every year Chebucto Community Net experiences at least one mail loop where someone's vacation message program malfunctions and everyone else on the list gets anywhere from 5-600 hundred to a couple of thousand messages from a fellow subscriber. This is not only embarassing if it's your vacation message that goes 'south' (so to speak) but it is a serious inconvenience to other subscribers who spend a lot of time and energy deleeting mail that just keeps on coming... In the worst case other subscribers start sending mail which starts another deluge of mail and in the end lots of people try to unsubscribe and it's a terrible mess. Just in case you think that this only happens to dummies or people with accounts with discount service providers... our experience is that this most often occurs with government mail servers or other large organizations who have dozens of warm bodies who should know how to do this right... ;-) SUGGESTION ------------------- Now if you're looking forward to a summer holiday we suggest that you enable your vacation message several days before you leave, preferably early in the week when the listowner, and your technical support people are nearby and when you will be able to check your own mail regularly (at least every couple of hours) for the first day or so. There's no harm in starting your message early... ;-) Have a great holiday!
