Hi,

I found it refreshing that the discussion on copyright is occurring. I
am presently webmaster (and an issues researcher) for the Atlantic
Salmon Federation http://www.asf.ca - but my background includes four
years as a newspaper editor (St. Croix Courier) and working with a
variety of environmental organizations, and publishing books.

The WEB brings to a head the problem of it being easy to republish both
articles and images - and it can bring you 'big grief real fast'.

On newspaper articles, my favourite is the Bangor Daily News
http://bangornews.com which fully archives articles from the time they
are written - so that a link to the article on the day it is published
still works a year later. Check out the media links page of the asf at
http://www.asf.ca/Links/linksmedia.html

The Halifax Herald at times can be marvellous. If you are interested in
the issue of Atlantic salmon, and sub-issues like potential endangered
species status for Inner Bay of Fundy River salmon, they have a special
links page that pulls such articles out.
http://www.herald.ns.ca/cgi-bin/home/package?ASF It is a wonderful
resource, and makes sense for a subject that will be around for a long
time, and is at times controversial. The Herald should be commended for
this.

I have personally had images 'ripped off' and used on the web - and in
every case I have gone after the individual concerned to take them down,
or pay fees for useage. The idea is not to be brutal, but for everyone
out there to play by the legal rules which give due rights to those who
create.

Best wishes to all

Tom Moffatt
