Dear Sust-Mar list, Oct. 4

I moderate a cross-Canada oceans list (which any of you are welcome to
join); just e-mail me if you would like to be added to the list or if you
would like to see our "mission statement" (which has been getting some rave
reviews lately:-)

One recent posting is worth sharing with you is a letter that I hope many of
you will want to sign on to. See below!

all the best, jan

Dear Oceans list, Sept. 23

Please sign on to this letter, preferably on behalf of a group, by Oct. 24.
To sign on, send your name, address (and phone # and the name of your group)
to Mark Butler of the Ecology Action Centre in Halifax: Mark Butler
<ar427@chebucto.ns.ca>. Actually, even better than e-mailing your
endorsement would be to print off a copy of the letter and to sign and send
it to Mark at: the Ecology Action Centre, 1568 Argyle St., Ste. 31, Halifax,
NS, B3J 2B3. (429-2202). The EAC is having a membership drive now; it is
important that the EAC keep up its numbers to facilitate its important work.

all the best, Jan

The undersigned are deeply concerned about the present proceedure followed
by the CNSOPB (Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board) in the bidding
process for offshore petroleum licences. We ask your government to take the
following two steps:

1)Halt the bidding process immediately... that is halt the issuing calls for
bids and exploration licences; and

2)Upon halting the bidding process initiate a process to determine which
areas are too ecologically sensitive (or too economically important) to open
up to petroLeum exploitation and designate these areas as closed to petroeum
activity.

The reason we are requesting that you take the above two measures is because
it is our assessment that some areas of the ocean are too ecologically
fragile and/or too economically important to the fishery to open up to oil
and gas exploitation. All present calls for bids and exploration licences
are issued without consideration of whether all or part of the area up for
bid should indeed be opened up.

As regards one particular site, we are asking the Government of Canada to
revoke NS98-2 Parcel 1, a 600,000 acre petroleum exploration permit which
begins at the shoreline between Port Hood and Cheticamp and extends into the
Northumberland Strait and includes spawning grounds for lobster, herring, etc.

Sincerely,
