Is Via Rail on the chopping block (again)? The federal Transport Minister has promised a revitalized national passenger rail system for Canada. Over the past nine years, Via has acheived outstanding success in substantially reducing its dependence on public support while maintaining almost all its services and even adding some trains after the infamous 1990 cuts. Via was recently allocated a funding base of $170 million per year for ten years. But it has recently become clear that Via needs about $200 million a year to retain its existing routes and leave enough to invest for the future. That's a difference of less than a dime per paycheque for the average taxpayer. But our federal government seems reluctant to give Via another cent. And according to a reliable source, Transport Canada has been asked to plan for major train cuts. At the same time, the Transport Minister is about to unveil a strategy for Via which will tap into private-sector investment and innovation. But unless Via gets some financial help to weather the present crisis, the Minister's plan may be doomed to failure. The future of train travel for Canadians and for our children is at stake.
