Save our Seas & Shores Coalition (SOS2) which includes fishers, tourism
operators, native bands, scientists and environmentalists, is trying to stop
oil and gas exploration and
development on inshore fishing grounds of the Southern Gulf of St Lawrence.
A parcel of shore along the Cabot Trail has already been allotted to
Corridor
Resources for exploration and if not stopped, seismic testing will be
carried out this summer. The exploration permit was issued in secret and
without any consultation with affected communities in Cape Breton or PEI.
There has been no assessment of the habitat, species, economic activities
and other social and cultural values of the southern Gulf that could be
damaged as a result of oil and gas development. No fish spawning areas,
lobster grounds, scallop beds, salmon migratory routes, vulnerable
groundfish nursery areas etc have been identified for protection. Oil and
gas rigs could go in anywhere, within sight of coastal communities and
tourist routes. Development in one area will trigger others throughout the
Gulf. Multinationals such as Shell, responsible for gross violations of
human rights and severe environmental damage, for instance in coastal areas
of Africa, will be profiting, the fossil fuels will go to promote further
pollution and unsustainable industrial development in the US, the acid rain
will come back to fall in Atlantic Canada, and global climate change will
be
fuelled if this is allowed to go ahead.
There is a petition you can circulate in your area.
