The federal Department of Agriculture proposes to cut down 10,000
trees in Point Pleasant Park in Halifax, possibly starting in
about a week. The stated reason is that they found 50 adult
spruce longhorn beetles (tetropium fuscum) in the park last year.
They have painted a doomsday scenario of potential damage to other
forests in the Province.
The task force have presented no evidence that the beetles are
harming trees in the Park. They have presented no evidence that they
would harm trees outside the Park. They have presented no evidence
that the Park is the source of the beetles. The beetles have been
found at seven or more other sites in the municipality. They are only
one of at least 20 species of beetles in the Park. In their native
habitat in Europe, the beetles are not considered a threat. There are
several species of potential predators of the beetle already in the
Park.
Even if the beetles were a threat, surely now, when the beetles
can fly 45 kilometers or more, is the worst possible time to cut down
their homes. In the winter, the beetles are in a dormant phase, and
could not escape.
If you are concerned, please contact the federal minister of
agriculture, Hon. Lyle Vanclief, 930 Carling Avenue, Ottawa, K1A 0C5,
tel: 613 759 1094, fax: 613 759 1455, email: vancliefl@em.agr.ca.
A rally is planned for Sunday, June 25, 1:30 p.m. in the Tower
Road parking lot at Point Pleasant Park.
Please write the Minister, pass the message along, and come to
the rally.
    Yours sincerely,
    Phil Pacey
