Invitation
You are invited to join the Friends of Point Pleasant Park
Association.
The Association seeks to preserve the environment of Point
Pleasant Park for the benefit of the community and the enjoyment of
the public. It attempts to persuade governments to conserve the
Park's natural state, to dissuade governments from degrading the
Park's natural environment, to ensure that protective legislation is
strictly followed and to act to maintain the flora and fauna of the
Park in as natural a state as possible. The Association also promotes
the appreciation of Point Pleasant Park. It proposes to foster
research regarding all aspects of the Park's ecology and to
disseminate the results of such research. The Association intends to
advance scientific understanding of the complex factors which shape
the ecological evolution of the Park by holding educational meetings
and sponsoring lectures, conferences, exhibitions and workshops on
the ecology and history of the Park and nearby areas.
There is a proposal by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)
to cut 7,000 or 8,000 trees in Point Pleasant Park this year, because
the brown spruce longhorn beetle (Tetropium fuscum) has been found in
the Park and in 51 other locations in the Halifax Regional
Municipality. Trees have been marked for cutting not because
Tetropium fuscum has been identified on the tree, but because sap has
been seen on the bark. The Association has opposed this proposal,
because sap is not a reliable indicator of tetropium fuscum, but
could be caused by many other species. Tetropium fuscum usually lays
its eggs in trees which have been weakened by other causes, such as
by other beetles or by lightning. The Association does not believe
that spending $1,000,000 to cut 7,000 or 8,000 trees will kill all
the beetles.
The Association has begun a legal action in the Federal Court to
find out if the CFIA exceeded its authority in ordering these trees to
be cut. The CFIA have repeatedly refused to reveal any scientific
data to support their proposal. The court action appears to be the
only way to bring any such data out into the open. If this data is
found to be insufficient, it should be possible to save most of these
trees.
We ask you to help us by joining the Association. Please fill out
the membership application below. The president of the Association is
Iain Taylor.
Point Pleasant Park has been a haven for Nova Scotians for 134
years. Today, the Park needs your help!
