The million tourists who flock to Prince Edward Island every summer have no
idea they're entering an environmental battle zone. On one side are the
farmers who grow world famous P.E.I. potatoes, their identity intricately
linked with the land; on the other are those who believe that pesticide use
is poisoning a province promoted as a paradise. Amid this charged
atmosphere, a new documentary explores competing visions of what Island
life is meant to be.

Paradise in Peril follows Sharon Labchuk and Vernon Campbell through the
2000 growing season. Potato producer Vernon is one of many farmers under
attack for pesticide use. Sharon, a flamboyant environmentalist who once
posed in a potato field wearing nothing but a gas mask, spearheads the
offensive. Both live in houses perched atop hills surrounded by fields of
potatoes. To Vernon, they are fields of dreams. To Sharon, they are a
nightmare.

Sharon tries to convince Islanders they are living with and abetting
environmental abusers and mounts a campaign aimed at scaring tourists. As
he tries to grow his crop, Campbell must deal with the public and the
provincial environment watchdog looking over his shoulder.

In the mid-'90s, thousands of Island fish started turning up dead in
streams and rivers. Caused by pesticide runoff from potato fields, the
"fish kills" worsened each year changing the way many Islanders looked at
farmers.

Paradise in Peril is co-produced by Michael R. LeBlanc of CinImage Films
(Moncton, N.B.) and Bill Kendrick of Island Images (Summerside, PEI) in
association with CBC Newsworld.

The 2000 election has further solidified the grasp of corporate capitalism
on the governance of Canada. In what amounts to a virtual dictatorship, the
arrogant right wing (Neo)Liberals are poised to continue the wholesale
sell-off of Canada to mostly American corporations, as well as tax cuts for
the rich, at the expense of the environment, the poor, aboriginals, and
other minorities. The "official" opposition - the newly garbed Reform party
- will not oppose the NeoLiberal cuts and tax-breaks. They will only force
the (Neo)Liberals further to the right.

The lopsided election results demonstrate the futility of trying to change
our society through traditional electoral politics while we're living in a
capitalist economic system where the public is overwhelmingly influenced by
mainstream corporate media, and the government is overwhelmingly controlled
by transnational corporations.

So it is up to us to build the REAL opposition. Opposition in our
communities, opposition in the streets. We must build the movement that
will place power in the hands of the people instead of the elites. There
are many more people being exploited than doing the exploiting. We are very
powerful - all we need to do is realize it and get organized!

One important step will be the moblization against the FTAA between now and
April.
See you in Quebec!
