The government of Prince Edward Island has just passed legislation to put a
bounty on coyotes, despite warnings from sheep farmers, government
biologists and agriculture scientists that bounties are useless.

A small special interest group of livestock owners, supported by the
right-wing PEI Federation of Agriculture, lobbied government members for
the bounty. Fear mongering has some rural residents believing that it's
only a matter of time before coyotes begin snatching children.

Coyotes only arrived on PEI 20 years ago, coming across on winter ice.
Biologists say their numbers have now stabilized. All other large
predators have been killed off, so some livestock owners are not used to
the idea that it is their responsibility to protect their animals. People
and their domestic animals must learn to live with wild animals and to
recognize the coyote's inherent right to exist without persecution. Many
methods of livestock protection are well suited to PEI's small farms.

While details of the bounty have not yet been announced, there is concern
that this small densely populated island is becoming unsafe for outdoor
recreation with hunters roaming the woods and fields. More than one million
tourists visit PEI every summer, many to enjoy hiking and biking in the
countryside.

The potential to overturn this bounty is great. Already many PEI
environment, wildlife and animal protection groups have taken a stand
against it.

You can help pressure government to stop the senseless slaughter of coyotes
by sending a letter to the Premier of PEI, and/or to PEI newspapers.
