Hello Paul,

I would like to have the following research question distibuted
electronically through the publication for which you voluntarily moderate.
 I appreciate it!

Thanks and greetings from Montreal.

Laura

I write to pick your brain and have you share knowledge and resources.

I am busying myself with some research on the subject of urban
sustainability (the essence of which is the integration of environmental,
social and economic factors as measures of the health of an urban centre).
My timing is ten days from start to finish and I will produce a 5-page
position paper. The goal is to look at the benefits and risks associated
with developing indicators of urban sustainability and an annual ranking
on the environmental health of Canadian cities.

The urban sustainable indicator field is an emerging one, but numerous
projects exist worldwide to develop and apply indicators. For example,
the UNCHS (United Nations Commission on Human Settlements) “Indicator
Programme” has developed a set of key indicators that are used to assess
conditions in human settlements worldwide. The Canadian Mortgage and
Housing Corporation (CMHC) developed the “Quality of Life Indicator
Framework and Applications,” and in February 2001, CMHC published
Practices for Sustainable Communities. Last, the UNDP (United Nations
Development Programme) publishes an annual “Human Development Report” that
ranks in an index the human condition in many of the world’s countries.

My challenge is to synthesize on-going Canadian and international
indicator and ranking initiatives. I will elucidate priority areas and
gaps. Pressing questions I will have to answer include:

·	What organizations are involved in ranking cities and what are the
criteria used?
·	Which organizations are active in national urban indicator development?

·	What is the nature of the organizations’ initiatives?

Ten organizations will be profiled and I will discuss the individual
initiatives each body carries out. I will look at the organization’s
mandate and examine the type of indicators used, how initiatives are
designed and applied, who their audience is and how the initiatives are
funded. Last, I will also examine look at the associated benefits and
risks as well as the intended outcomes.

After reading the explanation of my work, can you suggest people for me to
contact? Sources of information? Related programmes and initiatives with
which you are familiar?

Thanks for taking an interest in my work. My timing is tight so the
sooner I hear from you the better! Please respond by email or telephone
at 514-737-4162.

Laura
