A public Teach-In was held Feb. 2 in Moncton NB on water privatization,
organized by the newly-formed group SOS Eau water Sankwan. A team
representing Moncton City Council has been negotiating with US Filter,
owned by giant water company Vivendi, to enter into a contract for the
maintenance of the water distribution system (water, sewer and storm
sewers). The Teach-In was aimed at providing information to the public
where the City Councillors have been less than forthcoming with any
information regarding the deal, though they do say they will present the
contract for all to see for a two-month period once negotiations are
finished. Questions have arisen however, about the process used to enter
into negotiations with US Filter, and not going through the public
process of requesting tenders from companies, pursuant to the Public
Purchasing Act.
