Breaking Ground: Greening the Urban and Regional Landscape

Each year, the School of Planning at Dalhousie University, together with
many private and public sector supporters holds a public forum on some issue
of importance to the community. In partnership with Evergreen and the
Ecology Action Centre this year's event scheduled for March 20th-22nd, 2002
is Breaking Ground: Greening the Urban and Regional Landscape (schedule
below).

While the focus of this symposium will be greenspace, our goal is to
approach it in an integrated fashion by addressing "greening" at regional,
urban and neighbourhood scales. We take the position that ecological
principles can guide us in decisions related to the way in which our region
will grow, the way in which we design our communities, what we choose to do
with "pocket wilderness" in our neighbourhods backyards, what we choose to
grow in our gardens...

Lucien Kroll, a Belgian architect, will be the keynote speaker at this
year's symposium. Mr. Kroll's work reaches back over a period of several
decades and his interests range from designing ecological communities to
cultural development, and involving the public in the design process as a
vehicle for wider change.

This is a free event and is open to the public. Please distribute this
information widely!

As part of the event, we invite children, youth and adults in the Halifax
Regional Municipality to submit poems, short stories, artwork, and
photography to communicate experiences of “green” and “grey” spaces in our
region. The submissions will be displayed during the three-day event, and
included in the conference publication. Each of the following categories
can apply: Children (up to 12 years old), Youth (13-19) and Adults (20 +).
Prizes will be awarded in each category.

Guidelines:

Artwork and Photography: colour or black and white; 5" x 7" or 8" x 10" or
slides.
Short Stories and Poetry: typed and submitted electronically on disc or by
e-mail; maximum length for short story 1,000 words.

All work must be titled and labelled with the author's name and contact
information

Deadline: Submissions should be delivered or mailed to the address below by
Friday, March 15th, 2002.
