Please take time to read what follows and take action, its in your own hands. In a few weeks, thousands of hectares of Crown Forests are going to be sprayed with deadly poisons. During the past thirty years the Province of New Brunswick has sprayed herbicides on 270 000 hectares of Crown Forests with 2,4-D, 2,4,5-T, Round up, Garlon, Vision ( some containing Agent Orange). This aggression on our environment is carried out solely to promote a conifer industrial forest at the expense of naturally regenerating mixed wood forests. According to present policies of the Department of Natural Resources, more than 70 percent of our Crown productive forest is subject to herbicide spraying, including recognized deer wintering areas. The Atlantic salmon which made some of our rivers famous has practically vanished. Deer, once plentiful in the northern part of the province, has all but disappeared from areas treated with pesticides. UPM-Kymmene, J.D. Irving Limited, Ste Anne Nackawick Ltd, Bowater Maritimes Inc and Nexfor Fraser Papers Inc have practically complete control over management planning and harvesting of our Crown Forests. This year, these companies have planned and proposed the spraying of some 12 000 hectares of Crown Forests. Whereas this type of practice would not be allowed to UPM-Kymmene in its country of origin. On the other hand, native, social, labour and environmental groups of New Brunswick, have tried in vain to participate in the planning of the management of our Crown Forests. You have the opportunity to stand up for our health, that of our children and our forests. Ces agressions sur notre environnement se font uniquement pour promouvoir une forêt industrielle aux dépens d’une forêt mixte de régénération naturelle. Selon les politiques actuelles du Ministère des Ressources Naturelles, plus de 70% des forêts productives de la Couronnes pourraient être arrosé incluant les ravages de chevreuil. Le saumon de l’Atlantique qui a rendu nos rivières fameuses en est pratiquement disparu. Le chevreuil, autrefois en grandes quantités dans le Nord, n’existe presque plus dans les régions arrosées de pesticides. UPM-Kymmene, J.D. Irving Limited, Ste Anne Nackawick Ltd, Bowater Maritimes Inc et Nexfor Fraser Papers Inc ont, à toute fin pratique, un contrôle absolu sur la planification et la coupe de nos forêts. UPM-Kymmene, qui ne peut épandre ces poisons sur les forêts de son pays d’origine, en planifie et en recommande l’usage sur nos forêts. Alors que nos objections, pour les mêmes raisons qui ont amené les Finlandais a arrêter ces pratiques dangereuses, sont ignorées par notre Gouvernement. Des groupes de citoyens du Nouveaux–Brunswick formés de représentants des Premières Nations, de syndicalistes, de groupes sociaux et d’environnementalistes se sont vus refuser formellement toute participation effective à l’aménagement de NOS propres forêts. Voici l’occasion de prendre position pour notre santé, celle de nos enfants et de notre forêt.
