Nothing local in the sust-mar queue today. So here are some interesting

10. WEBSITE OF THE WEEK: BATTERY RECYCLING PROGRAM

Four kids and their discmans, walkmans, MP3s, gameboys, etc. going all
summer, produce double AA batteries like shell casings out of a high-speed
gattling-gun - I always end up with them of course (in exchange for a new
pair of AAs of course too).

Household batteries comprise a small fraction of 1% of total trash in
municipal landfills, yet they are responsible for between 50% and 70% of
all heavy metals found in landfills (mercury, cadmium, lead). Not only is
metal infinitely recyclable, but when recycled metal is re-melted, energy
savings of between 45% and 90% are possible, compared to making metal from
ore.

You can join "Eugene's kids' Battery Recycling Program" by mailing in your
used alkaline batteries to the Raw Materials Company (rawmaterials.com)
which specializes in proper disposal of toxins and reuse of recyclable
metals.

Their URL (so you can paste it to your subject line and hit go) is noted
below. And their non-virtual address is:

International Marine Group
P.O. Box 6, Port Colborne, Ontario L3K 5V7
You can also send the batteries to me at Lang Michener (address above at
(8)) and I'll add
them in with my monthly mail-in. Doing my wee bit.
